Greetings. Long time lurker, first time poster. :P

I got an A1U a couple months ago from B&H (they are awesome) and recently got the rebate too. It's a great camera. My only complaint is the Cineframe24 seems pretty useless. I took some test footage and it is way too jerky (even when the camera is still and the objects are moving) and is really unusable. It just looks downright bad. It's like frames are cut out and it sort of skips across in a strange way. I don't know if I am doing anything wrong. I think I am because I'm surprised Sony would put this feature in and have it perform so bad.

So my question is, has anyone used this freeware program called VirtualDub to deinterlace, remove the pulldown and convert to 24p?

Is there anyway I can get the Cineframe24 to work in a way that's watchable?

For the time being, I'm not to concerned with filmout. However, I want to mimic film as close as possible. Sort of like those straight to DVD horror movies that are shot on film but never see the darkness of a movie theater only the lights of your local Blockbuster video store, haha.

CineForm actually works quite well with Sony's CineFrame modes. Check it out:

Anyways, don't let CineFrame bring you down, you'll achieve superior results via post. Like Jung did using Avid and its 24p preset with some gamma curve tweaks. Check out the results:

Cineframe24 works best when captured or converted with the pulldown removal option from Cineform's ConnectHD or AspectHD. Strangely however, in version 3.03, enabling the pulldown removal and deinterlace options on regular 60i footage will result in even better 24p than if you start with Cineframe24. For now at least the best 24p workflow seems to be to shoot regular 60i video and convert/capture with ConnectHD to 24p using the pulldown removal and deinterlace options. This results in wonderful 24p footage. The only reason you haven't seen more of this is because Cineform 3 was released so recently.

Hi,i ve been using CapDVHS with HC1 ( it was stolen:(....) to capture m2t, and seems only CapDVHs has optio to make Virtualdub works, i can'trmeeber it's something todowitht eh header ofPS.

once u open the M2t , the virtualdub rocks.... tons of free filters, i use a a fine deinterlace plug in and convert to either cineform or images sequences.

if u r in doubt, better use images sequences as most editing software can take it.

also the FPS and pull down and lot easier if u set it right.
i only shoot at 25 FPS as i know it';s easiest to convert to other FPS say 24fps or others.

Yes, I have used VirtualDub for this. The best way to process stuff in VirtualDub, however, is to install the AviSynth frameserver, and then get Don Graff's MPEG2 decoding and deinterlacing filters - they are here:

Basically you will then open your .M2T files with DGIndex, save the project -> D2V, then write an AVS script that works with the D2V file and applies Telecide/Decimate filters, then open that in VirtualDub. Sounds tedious, however you only have to set it up once.
