Think you're looking at an external program Jack. Combustion or Boris will do it. Bit pricey though.

There are also approaches for After Effects and any of the 3D packages (Lightwave, Maya, etc).

My own solution is just to export the frame you want the flash in (if you slow down/freeze real flashes they rarely exceed one frame) to Photoshop.

Then either paint in your flash or borrow a real flash from other footage.

Then export this new frame back into your time. Done. It's one of the reasons to use Pro 2 because, in theory, it should be faster.

Even in big gun battles you can start to get very fast doing it w/ this method.

I used the free flashes from detonation films - worked great. but the free flashes are basically one frame long - you could make it yourself in PS.

I added a blur to the flash layer in PPro, and I think it looks better than not.

And detonation films has a lot of AMAZING things - smoke, explosions, missle trails...

very cool!
