I seem to recall reading that Sony would be unveiling the latest version of Vegas sometime this month and I'm wondering if that's accurate or just someone guessing? I'm sure we've got an insider or two around here who can spill the beans as it were. :)

NDA's prevent anyone who knows anything from revealing any information. Anyone who knows, can't say. Anyone who says, doesn't know.

Yeah. I know. But it never hurts to ask. :)

Here's what I wrote in Sony's own Vegas forums back on July 26th:

**************************************************
I just got the latest Sony Media Software News by e-mail which included this section about the upcoming WEVA convention (check out the last line):

"WEVA fevah
Professional videographers from around the world will converge in Las Vegas on August 21-24 to see and hear what's new in the world of wedding and event videography. If you plan to attend, be sure to stop by the Sony Media Software booth to see live demonstrations of Cinescore software and get a sneak peek at another upcoming release that will have video editors everywhere jumping for joy."

**************************************************

It doesn't specifically say Vegas 7, but I can't imagine what else it would be. We'll know soon enough I guess.

To see Vegas 7, just travel to Amsterdam's RAI in September and visit the IBC tradeshow:

http://www.ibc.org/cgi-bin/exhib_detail_cms.cgi?db_id=4287

(I can't verify the link right now, since the IBC site seems to be down. The link worked last month though...)

Sony's announcements re AVCHD camcorders references VEGAS 7 as supporting AVCHD and since the new camcorders are due out in Sept, my guess is that you will see something pretty soon

The link worked fine for me, Jon. Here's the excerpt you were talking about...

New Vegas 7 for HD video editing and production
See the newest version of Vegas® software! Vegas 7 includes key enhancements that provide better editing solutions for HD, increased playback performance for both audio and video, a robust XDCAM workflow and advanced editing functionality for increased productivity. Also on show is DVD Architect™ 4, which is included in the Vegas+DVD Production Suite. Vegas 7 is available in late September, with French, German, and Japanese versions available in the following weeks.

Late September. I was going to pull the trigger on Vegas 6 now (currently editing on Premiere Pro and hating it) but I think I'll just sit tight for another 45 days. I don't want to sink the cash into Vegas and have the newer one come out outside the widow for me getting the free upgrade since that's usually 30 days and I'm a tight wad that way. :)

we hope to have a bunch of Vegas 7 news for you next week. We've been told by our Sony reps that anyone purchaseing Vegas 6 from us at this point (Aug 10th) will qualify for the free upgrade to Vegas 7.

I don't know if this is for all purchases, but I do know that our customers will be covered. I'm pretty sure that once the new Vegas 7 info goes live next week, all sales going forward will be covered for everyone regardless of reseller.

You say free upgrade? Is that only for certain people?

Josh: what is unclear? If you buy Vegas 6 starting from August 10th you are
eligable for a free update to 7 (in other words, you bought 7).

Oh, I thought maybe (hopefully) he meant anyone who had Vegas 6 was eligilble for a free upgrade. Wishful thinking. Didn't read that post carefully. Saw "free" and got stars in my eyes.

Question: In the past has Sony generally offered an upgrade for the current owners of Vegas? (Vegas 6 + DVD was my 1st version, purchased last winter.)

Yes they have. As I recall, for the first 30 days, it was $149 for Vegas only and $199 for Vegas+DVDA. After that it went to $199 & $249 respectively.
A look through the online Sony store at https://www.sonymediasoftware.com/shopping/category.asp?id=111 shows that you can upgrade to Vegas 6 + DVDA 3 from a wide range of software.

Yes, an upgrade price is available for owners of previous versions right now. I would expect that to continue with any new versions. In fact, the upgrade price is usually even cheaper the first month or so after release.

yes we will have upgrades available and we'll start booking pre-orders for them next week.

What i can tell you is it looks like there will just be the Vegas7+DVD version. Vegas 7 on it's own is not in the plans. So I also expect to have a killer offer for Vegas only custoemrs to upgrade to Vegas7+DVD.

I'll keep ya posted!

I sincerely hope that's not the case or Sony will be swamped with complaints.
I know a lot of users (not me though) who have no interest in DVDA due to it's current lack of certain features.
Hopefully that'll change with version 7 :-)

That's reasonable to me. I never could understand why Sony would sell Vegas separately but DVDA had to be bundled. Eliminating the separate product makes perfect sense.

i hope they come out with 7!!
5 wass till the best yet. version 6 was not as impressive as version 5 for some reason. maybe its just me

Any word on what the new features are going to be? Beyond AVCHD support

I have the usual list of pet annoyances about Vegas that I would love to see fixed, but as far as new features.... meh... I haven't edited an HD project yet (no customers need HD and I cannot deliver HD unless on hard disk so why bother). If Sony offers something, I would hope it would be fixes for the current list of problems and ill-though out functionality. Don't get me wrong, I find very little to not like about Vegas which is why I bought it instead of Liquid a year or so ago. But there are times when I shake my fist at the monitor and say "Why cannot I find how to do..... or Why did you do that?"

One negative of Vegas (marketin?) was that there was no offer for buying the AC3 plug-in separately. The only option was to buy the full package with DVDA.
Some people preffer to render in Vegas and use other authoring app.
Now if the only option is full integration I hope Sony drops the price a bit ;)
