I know a lot of you will find it hard to comprehend the reasons for Sony releasing a PS3 of this magnitude but I see a lot of potential. For one thing there are Windows Media PC boxes that cost a lot more than 2500 dollars and Sony have not officially announced the price for this machine yet so it no point saying that’s its going to be expensive when its expected to have a Blu-Ray burner and maybe over 500 gigs of storage. Besides, the Pioneer Elite stand alone Blu-Ray player is 1500 dollars and that’s without a burner and a hard drive and it will still sell very well.

Nearly a year ago Sony mentioned that the PS3 can be used as a Non Linear Editing machine, so I expect that this machine is probably what Sony was talking about and I wouldn’t be surprised if Sony would offer a version of Vegas for this. Recently Sony announced that the original built of the PS3 was able to do two H.264 streams at 40MBPS each at the same time. Since they claim the retail version is more powerful, I suspect you are able to easily edit the 50MBPS AVC-Intra codec of Panasonic’s new cameras. Even without Vegas, I expect the machine to easily allow you to hook up an AVCHD or HDV camcorder to this and burn directly to a Blu-Ray discs or the hard drive.

The fact that you have a full media center, with the ability to play PS3 games and Blu-Ray movies and the potential to easily put your AVCHD or HDV videos onto a Blu-Ray disc makes this a very attractive system to get. Just please keep in mind that this unit is obviously aimed at high-end video enthusiasts.

Yep... If Sony releases such a thing -- a media center computer / BluRay player that can also play PS3 games, that could be a winner. If it has 500GB or even 1+TB of internal storage with a few options (gigabit ethernet, FW, etc..) for connecting external storage and allows ingesting of BD and DVD discs so they can be played off of hard drive. I'm definitely interested... BluRay and HD-DVD both support "Managed Copy" DRM to allow this.

As long as Sony offers it at a reasonable price and actually does something beyond the regular PS3 and/or what can be accomplished with a cheap Windows MC PC, then they'll do OK.

unfortunately, sony isn't a software-centric company. it's just not their core-compentency (they outsource or buy-in programmers through acquisitions, like sonic foundry). while the hardware looks great, without good software to back them up, they're up a creek without a paddle.

that's why XB is going to kick some major ass. MS's core compentency is software. that's why their 'hardware' business is very successful, because it's the drivers/software that builds a platform, not hardware spex.
