Why video became the illegitamate stepchild of cinema...

My first introduction to video was less than impressive. It was a black and white camera about 3 times the size of my super 8 and a reel to reel half inch deck that went to snow when the tape was rewound or fast forwarded. It was 1973,I was in the 8th grade and an AV nerd.I had enjoyed some success with super 8 film projects for science and history classes as well as sports
and already knew my way around a theater projection booth.I had also been doing internships with local TV stations and production companies.I had served as a PA on such 16mm epics as "The Reason for Medicaid" and "Kaybolt Wrecking Company".

At that time, there was a pretty decent "middle class" film business.16mm industrial films, commercials and corporate presentation films kept local production companies busy.Actors, cameramen, musicians, editors and lab folks all had work and didn't have to make an exodus to Hollywood to earn a living by their craft.

The video revolution of the 80's caused the businesses that hired 16mm film people to reinvent their audio visual needs.Cheaper cameras and decks as well as the sudden liberation from film stock costs and lab work seriously devalued the product.Small, fly by night video production facilities sprung up overnight offering cheap production at cut rates.Quality control became nonexistent. The middle class film market died.

Today, what once needed a full production and post production staff can be done by one person with a camcorder,a laptop and an LCD projector.Progress,I guess.

I'm hopeful though, that what killed middle class filmmaking will someday revive it.Prosumer HDV cameras have finally approached "virtual" film quality, very close to 16mm standards, some say it surpasses it,though I think that's debatable.Still, you factor cost of film stock, processing and telecine and what differences there are between HDV 24P and 16mm become negligible.

I'm even more hopeful that the recent advent of RED camera technology and Silicon Imaging's latest that doors will be open to a new generation of independent filmmakers who otherwise would have only dreams.

Hello,

Does anybody know the origins of the zebra patterns? When were they first used? Which camera was it?

Any information along those lines would be great.

Thanks very much,

Hello, all,

I am a film collector and have many reels of original 1910s - 1920 silent era film. Film preservationists have assured me that I could do very well releasing a few DVDs because most are one-of -a-kind.

Over the past two years, I had put a couple thousand dollars into this 3k HD telecine project and have all the equipment I need except for the camera to digitize the frames.

I was going to use a Nikon digital SLR camera that would have been perfect but after waiting for the price to go down for 8 months I just found out last week it is rated at 50,000 exposures, meaning, it's expected to die out after capturing 35+ minutes of film.

I need advise on several things. In order to transfer my films to digital I will be converting 35mm and 16mm motion picture film frames to individual digital photo files. A program will take these files and compile them into MPEG for HD video.

Attached is a frame closeup using my current digital still camera, barrel disortion and all. From the film SHADOWS (1921) starring Lon Chaney.

My spending range will be $700 and less. I am looking at several consumer near HD camcorders right now. The Sony DCR-DVD405 looks like it will do 3k photos and zooms in nicely on a 35mm and 16mm frame. Panasonic VDR-D300 may do the job, too but is not HD. Am I right or wrong?

One problem with the Sony DCR-DVD405 is that there is built in image sharpening and it produces "stepping" on curved lines, as seen in this review.
http://www.camcorderinfo.com/content/Sony-DCR-DVD405-Camcorder-Review/Still-Features.htm

Is there a way to disable this? Or can this be smoothed out in video editing software?

I also need this camcorder to to plug into my PC so I can get the frame grabs. Will this Sony plug in like a "webcam" and provide my PC images in the same exact resolution that it would record within the camera or be downsampled?

There seems to be no barrell disortion with the macro lens, which is essential. Color shifts are okay but I can't have any lens disortions.

I am very stuck here. Any advise on this or perhaps better camera models would be wonderful.

Or should I be looking for another digital still camera?

Hello all,

I'm going to be shooting a skiing documentary at Mt. Washington in a few weeks and and I had some very general camera questions so please give me some of your suggestions.

First off I'm deciding on what cameras so use and if this is a good choice:
*I'm wanting to shoot some HD footage so I'm thinking of renting a few of the panasonic HVX200 camcorders. I also have a sony fx1 that I want to use to do some time lapse footage.
* I am also going to rent out a few helmet cams (not HD i know but oh well bad quality helmet cam video is excuseable)

Questions :
1) are the hvx200 good cameras to use? anything better in the price range?
2) will the hvx200 footage and my son fx1 footage blend somewhat decently?
3) do you have any suggestions on good helmet cams ?

Also if you have any other general suggestions or comments I would appreciate them.

Are there any lens techs here?

I have an Angenieux 16-64 zoom which was "repaired" in Singapore and the optical cementing work was bad.

I got it used cheap some time back and the assumption then as that evident pale smokyness in the image was from lubricant which had condensed onto lens surfaces, an easy fix. But, all the bonded doublets themslves have had bad work., not such an easy fix.

So the assessment is that it is not economic for repair.

Except for decementing, cleaning and recementing the doublets which I could do if they were balsamic bonds, the stripdown and re-assembly/collimation is within my abilities.

Web info so far has been to try methylene chloride solvent. Immersion in a sealed container for two weeks has not even frightened the cement on the troublesome doublets. Heating to 215degrees C fared no better except to turn the white foggy cement bond dark.

Any advice appreciated.

Hello everyone

I have just bought a Canon YJ13x6B IRS lens for my XDCAM F350. I could afford a HD wide angle 1/3 lens with extender, so I got an SD one. I don't thinks my clients will notice any difference.

Is anyone out there using a Canon yj13x6b IRS wide angle lens with perhaps a UV filter or a circular polarizer? If you are which ones are you using? Is the filter diameter I need 85mm?

I know it sounds silly but I can't see any screw treads on the front of the lens. Can you screw filters onto the front of this lens or do you have to use a matte box to hold them?

Thanks for your help as always!

I've applied a Nattress G Film Conversion filter to a clip, dropped it into the source well, rendered it but I'm still getting "Drop Clip in Source Well to Convert" appearing on clip.
What am I doing wrong or haven't done?

Cool set of filters by the way.

Hey guys, i've been thinking of getting into Post-Production for Film/Commercial/MusicVideos/etc.. and im wondering what the industry is like. is it overcrowded with people and few jobs to offer? So I'm putting together all the costumes/set pieces/props for the film we're shooting in June-September. One of the costumes is for a character that is a demon. His skin is jet black. I was wondering what type of body paint would be best to do this. I was thinking of using liquid latex but in all of the pictures I've seen of it used on people that stuff looks really shiny. I don't want his skin to reflect light. Any suggestions?

Hello All,

So I am beginning to work with this director on a script that he wrote. He has brought me on as a producer and we are excited to work together.

Now the project is about to being filming in a week and It just came to mind that I haven't gotten anything in writing. As a matter of fact, we haven't discussed any deals (in regards to payment). Now i understand that i'll be working for free - credit & food, and i'm fine with that. But as I gathered information with SAG actors, i realized they get a back end deal. So they're not getting paid either, but if the movie is a huge success like "Blair Witch Project", they get a piece of the pie. And I too would like to be compensated like that, deservingly so.

How do i go about this? Are there any forms online that you could direct me to so i can get a signature on a document.

I'll keep the community up to date on this project and thanks for your advice.

I am debating over the Firestore FS-C 60 and 100. When you shoot short to hour long films, is the 4.5 hours enough? DO you ever feel pressured to squeeze work in? I know it depends how many takes per shot etc...but for a 1 day shoot should 4.5 hours be enough? Or is it really safe to go with the 7 hours. I plan to shoot action/epic style stuff if that makes any difference.

I bought a set of WarmCards from Vortex Media and I really like the looks. I have one question though:

Has anyone found a use for the Minus Green card? I tried it yesterday under the flourescent lighting of a weight room for a documentary I'm shooting and the color was great, but way too cool (opposite of warm), especially since the focus of the doc is on people which seem to need that warmth added to look good on DV/HDV footage. I thought the Minus Green card was used for flourescent lighting, or is it just for flourescent lighting with a strong green cast?

Any experience in this area or examples of where you have used the Minus Green card? Do you just use the +1/2, +1, +2, or +3 WarmCards most of the time?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I started this thread in another category and got no replies. So I am moving it to this one. Hope somebody knows how to do this.

-----ORIGINAL THREAD-----

I want my DVDs to show the chapter titles when I play them in Windows Media Player (actually a client wants this, but now I want it too). The nearest I can figure is that the info has to be registered with Windows on some database. I figure this is the case because when I watch a movie (Lords of the Rings for example) with Windows Media Player I can see the chapter names, as long as my modem is connected. But when I try to play without the modem connection the chapter names are gone and all I get is the generic title 1...

Anyone know where to register your names. And I don't want to enter the names on my computer. My client wants his clients to be able to put in the DVD and pick which chapter they want with ease.

I know they can use the DVD Menu pages, but that isn't what the client wants.

Thanks folks.

Recently came back from a skiing holiday where I greatly enjoyed filming the kids learning to ski. I took along an old Hi8 camera (I didn't want to risk my Panasonic MX500) and it was a shame that the quality of the footage was so poor. So I was wondering about getting a cheapo DV camera. One that's popped up as a possibility is a JVC GR420. One of the appeals here is that it sports an f1.2 lens and should be good at low light (but I can't see what the sensor size is). Does anyone here have any experience of this camera (either first hand or by reputation)?

Or what else might be appropriate? Trying to spend less than £150.

Anybody know of a way to adapt 8-pin 1/3" Fujinon DV lenses for some HD cams? They are still good lenses, and we have all the controls for them (focus and zoom). Seems like a waste to let them rot if we could use them on something else now that we're have HD equipment...

Anyway to adapt them to some other digital HD cams out there and should we even want to do this?

Hey All,

I recently bought a Portabrace hard case for my XH A1. I wanted something I could check on flights if neccesary.

Today, I got an email from Portabrace, directing me to a Youtube video featured a couple of guys putting their hard case through some pretty extreme tests...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0IsPp-nlR3U

Suddenly, I don't feel as bad about having to check every now and then (though I still put the case inside of a larger suitcase...)

Thought some of you may enjoy...

I noticed this a week or so ago. I was downloading footage from one of the forums here and when I played it back, it looked all washed out and magenta.

At first I thought it was just a problematic video, but later I replayed some other clips I'd saved and they were doing the same thing. What I discovered was that all the problem clips had been encoded with the H264 codec.

But then it got even more complicated. If I save the clip, it looks screwed up, but if I let it play right in my browser, it works fine. Below are two screen caps of the same video clip. One is playing in my browser and the other is playing directly through Quicktime.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the H264 codec, but without any luck. I'd rather not uninstall and reinstall quicktime, but I guess I will if I have to. Has anybody seen anything like this before? I searched the WWW but with no luck.

I am sure they use HD or HDCam, or maybe uncomprressed HD for their productions. But once they air the HD programming thru cable, it must be compressed. I wonder if that is MPEG 2? or MPEG 4? How is HDV quality compared to that of Discovery HD thru cable (viewer side)? Thanks

Having just put the final show to bed it is time for a little reflection.

The thought of being able to produce, write, film, edit, and score your own production may sound like everyones dream. I am hear to tell you its a lot of work. There is a new found respect for those who do this for a living. You just gotta love it.

Would I do it again, you bet. It was probably one of the most challenging things that I have yet to do. The best thing .... was Doing It. The worst, well it really was not all that bad, except for the part of not making any money, finding advertisers, finding someone to find advertisers.

I appreciate all the help that was received from this board and the great people on it.

What's next? Well there is the DVD, UWOL Challenge, maybe a few weddings for free of course ... and hunting season is just around the corner.

Again thanks all.

I presently own a Sony HC-1 and have rented PD-170s and XL-2s. When doing hand held work I rely on the auto focus to focus the lens and then go to manual.

If you're using a camera such as the new XD Cam EX that has a full manual lens, how difficult is it to focus, adjust iris etc when you're using it hand held?

I am specifically looking for someone near Wauwatosa. The story goes like so. My girlfriend lives in Taiwan. I live in RI. I see her maybe twice a year if we`re lucky enough. I`ll be going to see her next month if all goes according to plan...she won`t know I`m going. So there is this dress I`ve been trying to get for her from Forever 21. I got a medium from the site, come to find its too small. I go to get a large instead, but its no longer on the site. Once its off the site they never make it again. I called a local store, they had like 10 in stock according to the computer (varied sizes) but when I went there (after I was told one would be held) they had none in stock at all. Must be a computer glitch they say. So he looks up stores around the country, one being Gadzooks in the Mayfield Mall in Wauwatosa, WI. They have the dress in stock, on hold for me since last thursday, waiting for me to find someone to pick it up because they don't ship by rule. I want that dress for her and I need help picking it up and having it sent to me. If anyone knows someone that wants to make $10 for their troubles and help a guy whose desperate out, please, let me know. Thanks so much.

hey everyone - I'm about to buy my XH A1 and was wondering what a good choice for a battery would be. I've looked at the Anton Bauer ElipZ Battery Package and was wondering your thoughts. Howdy!

Since this is also my first post, I'd like to say hello to everybody on here. I'm a student, doing a masters course in Economics and have been living in Poland for 12 years now. In my spare time, I connect two of my hobbies which are bicycle trials and video making. The result of this are 3-10 minute internet videos of people riding trials. Since the trials scene is very small, I have never thought about releasing DVD's or going "big" with production. So far I have been using various 3-chip cameras (VX-2100, HC1000E, and in the past an industrial U-Matic 3CCD Sony camera - I tell you, that was fun to use!) but have thought that it would be interesting to check out an HDV camcorder.

Since I don't want to spend much, I have decided to go for an HV20 - seeing as it has various features that are of use to me, especially an AV input which was the main reason I decided against the HDR-HC7.

Now before I start asking questions, I'd like to explain something. For the past 6 years that I have been editing DV footage, I learned everything by trial and error. I know absolutely no theory behind DV and HDV editing. I just know what works and what doesn't, unfortunately that's only the case with DV - and hence this topic. I'm sure you therefore understand what my problem is - 3/4 of the information on this website is just impossible for me to follow.

For a start, I have read through many topics on here about how fast a PC should be for editing HDV. Obviously making short 3 minute sports videos is closer to making a music video than to releasing a DVD from a wedding - so it will require a faster pc. I can't really spend too much time waiting for various effects to render, else editing a 3 minute video will take me many days and will no longer be fun. My current spec is an A64 3500+, 3gb of ram and a 8600GT card with PureVideo support. It's great for editing DV - I'm therefore looking for a PC that will perform similarily with HDV. I was thinking about upgrading to a Q6600 - can Premiere 2.0 utilize all 4 cores at once? Do you think that such a processor will give me the possibility to edit HDV footage fairly quickly?

My second question concerns compression and de-interlacing. I have downloaded quite a few m2t files from a German website which did a side-by-side comparison of the HC7 and HV20. This was my first attempt at editing HDV, and it turns out it's not as simple as DV. Unfortunately, I couldn't get the video deinterlaced using Adobe Media Encoder, no matter what settings I tried. Could somebody explain why this is? If you require more information about the settings I used, please ask.

And finally, the Canon can shoot in 25p. There is no such project setting in Premiere 2.0, even in the custom tab. Do I therefore use a 50i project?

edit: The Canon has a 43mm conversion lens mount - the best lens I can afford is an 0.5x Raynox HD-5005, but that has a 37mm mount and an 37->43mm adapter. Will I not get a black ring around the video with a 37mm lens?

Thank you very much in advance, and sorry for my English, I'm terrible at writing long things.

Can a Decklink HD card from blackmagic:

be used to live switch at events similar to the black magic intensity.

If it can... Can 3 cameras be hooked up to 2 card? SO that you can do live switching?

I was told to only use one brand of tape so I went with Sony, but now I am curious of the difference between tapes. I am shooting an XHA1 and HV20 as a back up on occasion. I have purchased Sony HDV 63min tapes as my mainstay and for less important things that are likely to just be thrown out, Scouting footage or random stuff not intended for use) I bought some Sony Premium 60min DV tapes.

I also see Sony Excellence series tapes what is the major difference between Premium, excellence and HDV tapes? Other than a price increase from roughly 7-10-15 dollars at full retail individual prices.

Also I am assuming I should use a Sony Head Cleaner as well, Is this accuarate or are there better ones I should consider?

Thanks for any info.

Hi,
I was going to buy another hard disc, but then I thought, "Wait, why not think this through thouroghly first? I should I spend my money and configure the system so that it is most effective, safe, fast, futureproof and moneysaving?"
So instead of just buying another USB HDD I started researching in this area.
But there is more I have to know... So I am asking for your advice when setting up new hard discs. I would like:
a) Reasonably future proof (want to edit HDV in a near future)
b) Maximum speed for rendering and output
c) Reasonably safe, especially for the OS, programs and "access files" like current still images library, favourites etc.

I currently have one 120 IDE internal system disc and two USB 280 GB discs. I ended up buying one SATA 400GB disc. But in a near future I hope to afford more discs.

How would you recommend me to set up a hard disc system? (or how is your system configured?) Is it necessary to use RAID-0 for HDV editing? How do you do your backups? With RAID-1 or manually backupping?
Thanks!

I read about it in a recent thread but still wasn't sure about so here it comes:
I plan to shoot outdoor with my dvx100 in progressive and squeezed mode. The indoor shots will be done with a sony vx2100 which is then interlaced and letterboxed.

What are the best projectsetting to use in premiere pro if the final output is for a widescreen tv?

For an effect I'm considering for an upcoming 48 hour film festival, I'm trying to figure out how best to accomplish bathing some characters in an ethereal blue light. Sort of like the ghosts of the dead jedi in the Star Wars films, but without the transparent look. The scenes will all be outdoors in a desert environment, and including both closeups (easy to do with lighting and gels) and shots of characters far in the distance walking across the screen (much tougher with conventional lighting). I don't own any special effects software, though I may bite the bullet and get AE if its easy to do this sort of thing with the program, without using a matte (I don't have any matte experiance and probably won't have time to figure it out before the project begins). If there's any cheaper or shareware software out there that could help me do a simple effect like this I'd prefer that, I'm on a budget. (Aren't we all?)

How would you get those distant shots on a 48-hour deadline of ghostly figures walking across a lonely desert plain? Special Effects/compositing or conventional lighting?

Thanks!

Cheers,
Brandon

Hello Everyone.

It seams that everyone is going HD. I have only been editing SD, so I have a lot of catching up to do, so thanks for indulging my newbie questions.

Just what can PPro2 edit without any plugins?

I am considering a CanonXL HD, can I edit the HD files in PPro2?

It seems that all of these cameras have their own proprietary file format, which are most universal, and which can PPro2 edit out of the box?

If we can't get there from here, what plugins would work for the Canon?

Will AXIO be able to handle the Canon files without any additional plugins?

Thanks in advance!

I have been trying to use my xl2 and a streaming video codec to produce live video presentaions. The camera works great but the audio will not sync. Does anyone have any views on how to sync the video and audio over a the internet in this type of application.

I'm working on a project, editing it. The director lives 600 miles away. When ADR begins, I will need to stream the video and live audio across the internet. Any ways to use the GS500 to recieve DV footage as an external monitor, and then spit it back out at the same time to a video chat service? Thanks.

Dear Sirs,
I need a subtitle program that works with Quicktime *.mov files. Could anybody give me a recommendation? I want to hard burn the subtitle files into the video. It's for the trailer showcase for an upcoming film festival. I need to sub the film in to bunch of different languages.

Hi,
I'm looking to get the Red Eye wide angle lens for my XL2, but I'm not sure which one to get - the .7, .5, or .4x. I'm trying to get as close as I can to an extremely wide, somewhat distorted 'Kubrick-esque' (or 'Gilliam-esque') look, ala 2001: A Space Odyssey or A Clockwork Orange. I would think that the .4x would be the best bet for this, but I don't know much on this, so any help would be appreciated. Would anyone have comparison shots, or what a .4x wide angle lens shot would look like?

Thanks,
Joe

Avid announced that starting September 1 2007, FreeDV will be discontinued. See http://www.avid.com/products/freedv/index.asp.

"Available until September 1, 2007 - Effective September 1, 2007, Avid is discontinuing the Avid Free DV application offer, and has no immediate plans to make an updated version available."

Avid FreeDV is the best free DV editor out there, available for both Windows and Max OSX. For those just starting out it is a good way of "getting your feet wet" - grab it until you can. The download link is not obvious, you have to click on the screenshot on the top of the page to get to it. You have to register, but you can provide bogus data, after filling out the questions, you will get the unlocking info right there on the website.

While you're there, also grab the 14 short training videos likely to dissapear as well.

Have fun editing!

Have you submitted footage to either iStockPhoto or RevoStock for sale?

After receiving no replies from first contact with certain video libraries, I contacted iStockPhoto a while back, who said they didn't plan to do video, so I went with RevoStock (and a while later, once I'd signed, iStockPhoto announced their video service - oh well).

Looking back at sales and terms, RevoStock seem to have great terms, but the volume (looking at the most popluar video clips) has been low compared to the newer iStockPhoto service.

Has anyone got experience of the iStockPhoto service from a seller's point of view?

Anyone switched between the two?
