I am in need of a good way to downscale all of my HD-SHQ HD1a footage into a widescreen standard def file for editing in Final Cut Express.

Right now I am importing the files into Mpeg Streamclip, and exporting them as 16:9 NTSC DV files, this works great and is quick except for the process seems to "lighten" the footage a noticeable amount, and destroy some of the dark blacks/shadows and contrast.

I like using Mpegstreamclip because it is quick, and has a batch mode for overnight processing of lots of files. But I don't like what it does to my footage.

Is their a better way to dowscale to SD? I realize I could export from mpegstreamclip into Apple Intermediate Codec at 720p30, do my edits, and then export from FCE to a standard def file. The problem with that is, that I am mixing alot of standard def clips (from lipstick cameras) into my timeline, and it seems silly to uprez those clips (To my 720p timeline), just to downrez them again on export, but I don't really know what is best here.

Explore streamclip a little more. You'll find that it has controls/adjustments(hint) for anything you could want. BTW you want to be exporting quicktime movies using the dv compressor if you're not already.
