Let me ask; if the 1080i video shot at 24 or 30 fps from the V1 camera looks like 24 or 30p respectively, and the delivery is television (SD/HD), why is it neccessary to remove the pulldown?

And additionally, what would be the workflow for Avid XP?

The pulldown was created because of TV delivery and those who don't have TVs that can do this: movie DVDs are 24p and either the DVD player and/or the TV would actually add a pulldown, if either had the capability.

It makes it easier. But many of us want to remove the pulldown if we're going to 24p/progressive scan DVD or even a filmout.

I'll look into a workflow for Avid users.

One thought occured to me...wouldn't Avid's Intermediate Codec allow you to capture in another flavor of HD, much like the Apple Intermediate Codec? The AIC allows you to remove the pulldown, as well.

If any Avid editors with a V1u can capture with the I.C. in Avid, and see if the pulldown can be removed, post it here!

I am getting a demo camera for the weekend tomorrow, so I will. I am not exactly sure if Avid gives you the option to capture in the selected codec. The usual workflow is to capture in HDV and then transcode into DNxHD. I'll play with it.

I captured and change it to Photo - Jpeg at 75% quality, creating basically an Intermediate Codec. I think it might actually work.

Heath I just got to reading your helpful paper. A question:

The interlace frame you found was nice because it had combing. When I was stepping through some 24p -- I didn't find combing at all. But, I did find two frames that were identical -- every five frames. I assumed, perhaps wrongly, that these were the 2 judder frames.

I'm asking because I did something wrong, because after importing back into FCP I clearly had a messed-up frame at regular intervals.

Just got a Sony V1 recently and been looking at potential workflows for progressive. Trying to get my head round this whole pull down - is it only if the framerates dont fit neatly? I am just about to ask a silly question I think... but there is much talk of 24p, what about 25p? This is the progressive offered on the V1. Would I use this same method in the article? Hmm, just looked at cam specs, and it says 24p. But in the menu and on screen it says 25pscan? Confused.

The V1E offers 25p mode, not 24p mode, and there is no pulldown to worry about with 25p.

At that point, I'd just export a regular QuickTime Movie (not conversion) that's set up as a photo - jpeg at 75% quality (not HDV) from your timeline. Once that's done, open it in Cinema Tools and conform it to 23.98 fps. Re-import on a photo - jpeg 75% timeline at 23.98 fps (you can start with HDV to get the frame size, etc., right, but the compressor should be photo - jpeg 75%). Render and there you go.

Correct. V1U would refer to a US model. E refers to a European model.
