The split command 's' seems to cut all the tracks on the timeline. I'm cutting picture against sound so i really don't want to mess with my music track.

I've given up that idea for the present and am using the Trimmer quite sucessfully but I'm curious if there is another way.

Make sure you select just the clip you want to cut. If you're cutting everything - that (usually) means you have more than one clip selected.

Otherwise, check to see you don't have ripple tool selected.

"S" will actually only split SELECTED events.

1. If some events under the cursor are selected and others are not, only the selected ones will be split.

2. If all events are selected, all events under the cursor will be split.

3. If some events on the timeline are selected but none under the cursor are selected, NOTHING will be split.

4. If NOTHING is selected, everything under the cursor will be split.

To me, it sounds like you want to cut up the video and leave the audio alone. To do this, there is an icon up with the edit tools, by the ripple. It is called "ignore event grouping". If you select the track you want to work with and hit "s" to cut with while the ignore button is down, you'll be able to only cut the video and not the audio.
