Hey All,

Simple problem, but I can't find a fix! I'm running FCP 5.1.4 on my PowerMac. When I import, or capture, a video file it I can't hear the audio when it plays back. I can see the audio meeter on the side going up and down, so I know it's recognizing the audio in the clip, but I can't hear anything!

Once I export out the video from the FCP timeline and play it in QuickTime I can hear everything! But I just can't hear anything while I'm editing. Makes trying to sync audio a pain obviously!

Any help on this would be much appreciated!

Hi Tim. My response pertains to my use of FCP 4.5, but I am assuming the basic menuing system to be roughly the same.

How are you monitoring your timeline? Are you using an external monitor through a camcorder or av/dv deck? If so, check your audio settings under the View menu. (Check at the bottom of the View menu for the external devices options and check to be sure the audio follows the video. If so, do you properly have speakers connected to your external monitoring setup?

You may also choose to monitor your audio output through your standard OS audio ouput, but if you are monitoring the timeline through an external device (and depending upon a number of factors such as the quality of your video card or the av/dv device), you could find the audio/video sync to be 'off' as far a monitoring and may give you a false representation of the timing.

Following Jonathan Jones line of thought it sounds like you have external monitoring turned on. View->External Video->Off and see if that helps

YES! Thank you both!

I had external monitoring turned on! :-P Silly me.

I don't work in FCP very often so I wasn't familiar with this issue.

Thanks a million!
