It is normal. Mine does it and there are lots of posts on the forum about it.

the first day I got mine... I charged the battery, turned it on, heard that, and promptly called Canon. It's normal... but sounds terrible.

You should hear the GL2. It sounds like it's having a meltdown when you put a tape in.

Take off the front protection cap of the lens and look into the lens when you power up, fascinating :-)

What's going on is a test the camcorder do to the lens to find out if it's working properly. Iris, IS and so on...

When our camera is operating and you turn it on the tripod (or anywhere) it begins to make a light ticking noise somewhere in the mechanics.. It is hardly noticable, but the microphone does pick it up. Do any of your cameras make the noise?

After pressing buttons and listening to sounds, it is apparently our autofocus on the 20X lens that makes the clicking noise. Do yours make noises, too (that the mic can pick up)?

Uhm, it doesn't because the camera is turning on...? You can't record til the camera is on? lol

Scott, (and others)...

What you are hearing when you power up is the Optical Image Stabilization gyro finding home. That's the pulsing you can see when you look into the face of the lens during power up. The OIS uses a Variable Angle Prism and that's the part that moves briefly at power up.

As has been stated, this is normal. I have also heard the slight ticking sound when the auto focus is operating during normal operation. Although I could hear it with the camera on my shoulder, it was never loud enough to get into the audio.

Just last week, we were shooting a cable spot in a store and our XL2 (with the 20x lens) went black. Shut it off, then back on, and that's the first time we ever heard the clicking sound. But it sounded pretty nasty, couple clicks, actually. And the image never came back. Switched out lenses to our old 16x and we were back on our way with everything working then.

Tried to toggle the image stablizer, auto focus buttons, nothing seemed to change. Even tossed the 20x onto our XL1, same thing happened. Anyone ever ran into this before? I'm just curious how toasted the lens is before we send it in.
