Can someone walk me through the proceedure of trashing preferences. I have FCP 5 and have recently had a problem with FCP freezing up on me. Also when I shut down and reboot my external drives do not attach. I have have never trashed preferences and thought this might resolve my issues.

Thanks.

I'm a relatively new user of FCP, so I'm no expert, but my understanding is this:

Go into your home folder, then open the library folder, then the preferences folder.

Delete the file "com.apple.final.cut.pro.plist"

Then scroll down to the FCP User Data folder, and delete

Final Cut Pro 5.0 prefs
Final Cut Pro Obj Cache
Final Cut Pro Prof Cache

Then empty the trash.

Also: Don't do this while FCP is running. And don't trash folders, only files.

There is free program that will backup and restore your preferences for you. It also trashes prefs for you with a click of a button.

Set up your FCP system as you need, use this to backup a "good" set of prefs and then anytime you suspect a corrupt prefs, restore. It's available at

http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/14729

There is a version for FCP6, FCP5, and earler. Select the version of FCP you have.
