It's time to roll out the drug tests.

These are the lines the yak speaks.

These have been there since FCP 1.0

And you know you've REALLY been around the Mac a long time if you remember the Yak's spiritual ancestor - The Talking Moose.

God, was that really 20 years ago? Wow, to quote the another guy who would have been right at home at the genius bar...

"Time flies like an arrow... Fruit flies...." (choking up and can't finish)

Sigh.

Haha...I don't get it.

...inside jokes that cropped up between the programmers?

I especially like the "I'm highly in favor of putting in code to do stuff."

Bill Davis March 30th, 2007 11:25 PM

Ben,

Once upon a time when FCP was the newbie editing software, a lot of us "pioneers" started using it and when we'd leave the program running and come back from a break, there on our screens was a little animated BEAST grazing on part of the timeline.

Almost before we knew he was there, we'd move a mouse or hit a key and a speach bubble would appear with some Yak wisdom. Then he'd trot off screen. At first, none of us knew where he can from or how to invoke him.

It' was just a wonderful little random EASTER EGG from the hip young FCP programmers.

After a while, word spread of the key combinations to invoke the Yak, and his revolving list of lines are in the code block that gentrated this thread.

As FCP grew and matured, the Yak faded away, probably because an annimated YAK isn't all that business-like - and FCP started becoming a "serious business tool" for a lot of consitiuencies.

But in those early days, it was symbolic of the charm of the new tool, and those of us who stumbled upon him, remember what it was like to be treated to a random laugh in the middle of exploring such as killer tool.

Call it the "hidden spirit" of Final Cut Pro. The Yak itself might be missing, but every time you want use FCP to do something cool, and you succeed, it's reflection of the Yakness of the original programmers intent.
