Avid Training Ideas?
 

Hey everybody....I need help. I'm trying to get some exposure to Avid, but need some ideas on how to do that. I've been trying to get involved with some local editing studios that do use Avid, but no ones really hiring or taking interns at the moment. Could you guys give me some recommendations on what would be a good way to get some experience with Avid?

I thought about possibly getting an academic version of media composer 3.0 so I could basically teach myself. Figuring this might be a good start.

Should I think maybe offering to do some volunteer work at one of the local studios? At the moment I can't really give up my full-time job, (Video Production Manager for Engineering firm) so my schedule will be somewhat limited. Any help/advice is hugely appreciated.


*Forgot to add that I have been editing with Premiere Pro for about 5 to 6 years now (Corporate setting) and I also have a good amount of experience with Final Cut Pro. I'm in the Denver area also.

Getting hands-on experience with Avid 3.0 would be a good idea. So, if you can afford and you qualify for the academic version it would get you up to speed the fastest. I would also look at lynda.com and Avid's web-site for training.

The good news is that you know Premiere and Final Cut, so once you understand how Avid is a little different in how it handles media, then I think you;ll catch on quickly.

Thanks David. Yeah I've actually been going through the free tutorials on avid.com for about a week, and getting some good beginning exposure. The one thing I'm finding, which I didn't quite realize until now, is how similar all the NLE's truly are. I didn't quite think about how since I do have experience with other NLE's getting into Avid isn't very different. Since I've been watching all the tutorial videos I really feel like I would be able to jump almost straight in and feel really comfortable with Avid in just a couple days. I would say the one true way avid differs from say FCP of PPro is that its group based, and it looks it has its on intermediate when it comes to media. Other than that, everything is pretty much the same concept. Thats encouraging :)

Gary, I've been following this thread with interest. I was thinking about getting
the academic version of Avid MC, but someone told me a couple of days ago that the it
is missing a few key components like the ability to export EDLs. Do you know if this is true? Would the academic bundle from video guys be the complete package?

nothing missing from the EDU version accept 3rd party software. Which you can get as the bundle above.

I'm a teacher and purchased the Academic version of MC3 from Videoguys about four months ago. I've already purchased the Boris, Sonic, etc. package directly from Avid.

How much would just the Class On Demand Complete Avid MC training DVD cost?

BTW, I had asked about the Class on Demand DVD when I purchased MC 3 from you guys, but was told there wasn't a package deal (at the time).

That was a very quick reply! Looking over the description, the Avid COD DVD seems a little basic. I've been using Avid for awhile now, so I do understand capturing, basic editing, trimming and basic CCing.

Do you have any training DVD's or books that dig deeper into the more advanced features of Avid's effects and color correction?
