Thanks for the heads up, Jeff! I'm gonna have to try this out..

Before diving-in, take a moment to look through the discussion forum on Avid's site. It looks like there may be some issues on boh the XP and Mac platforms that still need to be resolved. It might be a good idea to wait a little while unless you're a courageous soul.

What kind of issues? I have been using it (Mac version, I haven't had a chance to try the XP version yet) and it has performed flawlessly so far. I didn't expect it to be this good.

I checked out hte forum, and it appears that most of the problems are user misunderstangs. It does appear though that there was some kind of glitch in the Mac version because they put up a 1.01 version for download. but I had the first version loaded on three Macs without any problems.

what is this, is it a free editing program? why would they just give it away? Maybe because they want to promote an avid program that does a lot more? Can you capture and do some cool things with this program.????Thanks

Jon Yurek October 9th, 2003 07:42 AM

You know, I may check this out on my iBook since I don't have any NLE over there yet, but I'm really disappointed it's only for XP on the Windows side, or I'd be giving it a serious look.

... in case anyone's wondering, I use 2k, and don't have any intention of using XP anytime soon.

Jeff Chandler October 9th, 2003 08:46 AM

Yes, it's free. You can capture and do many ither things with it. And, yes, they are hoping you will like what you see and buy one of their programs.
As for being XP only, that is the trend. Premiere Pro is XP only. I doubt you will see any new NLE's being released for anything other than XP. Wheter we like it or not!

Jon Yurek October 9th, 2003 04:11 PM

Fine with me. It'll give me more incentive to buy a Dual G5.

Yes, its a freebie... designed to introduce people to the avid interface.

Runs on both mac and pc.

It's a stripped down version of express. And it will NOT open or import files from other Avid NLE's. (Xpress, Pro, Symphany, Composer, Newscutter) So you cannot use it as an "extra" copy.

The hope is people will want the "full potential" and buy up to Avid xpressPRO.

This is a similar approach to FCP Express... But FREE as opposed hundreds of bucks... but it is more limited than FCP express.

FYI:
You can't use a hotmail/yahoo account when you register to download Avid Free DV - if you do, you won't receive the un-lock username/password in your email so you can install the program.

I received the un-lock info when I used my earthlink account.

So far so good, but the download-install-startup process is a total turn-off - for a program that's free, it sure does make you work for it.

"Does it have the color correction features?" he asked with anticipation.
