Vegas blu-ray & H.264
 

I'm thinking of taking the plunge and getting a LG blu-ray. What 's the best way to get the best quality from HDV onto disk using V8Pro? Is Vegas BR codec = H.264?; better? worse?

The BD (Blu-ray) standard currently allows for three codecs to be used on a BD disc.
~MPEG 2
~AVCHD (h.264, MPEG4pt10)
~VC1 (New name for WMV, essentially).

Vegas is optimized to create MPEG2 and AVCHD streams for BD. It can create VC1 streams as well.
Edward gave you one of the workflows; there are others but it's the best place to start.
You can play around with HD on a disc very cheaply by burning AVCHD to a standard DVD, and it will play as HD in *most* BD players.

Do you need to render to one of the 3 formats mentioned or can you "burn- blu ray disc" from a m2t editing timeline?

You can render to any of those formats from any source on the Vegas timeline. Rendering from HD source is best, of course.
Vegas isn't like other NLE's. source does not need to match output and vice versa.

I can find the H.263 option, but NOT the H.264.

Any clues?

In Vegas,the h.264 is called Sony AVC.

Other then the amount of disc space used, is there any difference in output quality with the various formats, or will they all look the same? Is one format more compatible with various set top BluRay players? I know the PS-3 is very compatible, but I have a Panasonic BDP-30. Is it compatible with a Bluray burned on a DVD-R ? When I try loading one I get the following messages "DVD," then "uncompatible format." I've been doing Mpeg 2 video with DD5.1 audio.

I tried encodig as AVCHD to a DVD-R using Edward's Workflow in Vegas 8. My Panasonic BD-30 Blu Ray player still gives the message "unsupported."

I tried burn-blu ray from timeline on a rewritable blu ray. Brought it to best buy, tried it on 2 sony and 1 sharp blu ray players none of them worked. Any ideas?

Get a PS3. Plays Blu-ray encoding from regular DVDs, and most HD renders(mp4,wmv) straight from a USB thumb drive.

If you want you can play games too :-)

Thanks, but I am more concerned about being able to sell Blu Ray DVD's to clients that they can actually play on stand alone players..

I'd like to reopen this discussion if possible. I very much have an interest in playing back HD content on standard DVD's in a PS3. Can anybody point me in the right direction to accomplish this?

Not all BD players support BD-RE, plus some of them support only MPEG-2/4
have to lookat the specs
