Cool!

great for burning, but will you ba able to playback bl-ray movies and have them play as full 1080p out put through the macbook/Pro's dvi out?

My guess is no. The dvd player in a macbook/pro is just that: a dvd player.

Maybe third party bluray play back support will be needed.

After NAB or WWDC I expect that the new macs will support BOTH HD DVD and Blu-Ray as Apple has claimed they will be supporting both formats since both use H.264.

Geoff Murrin April 6th, 2007 01:47 PM

Yeah, but I would love my current 1.83 core duo macbook pro to be able to play back bluray from either store bought movies, or ones I edit then burn to bluray disc via FCP.

Cool none the less.

There are a lot of people complaining about Apple not releasing a built to order Blu-Ray/HD DVD option and the obvious conclusion is that Apple doesn’t want to take sides yet but my theory is that it’s probably because of DRM issues.

I think that they will soon unvail (Likely with Leopard in June) a Dual-Blue Drive that does both. Apple is not just going to keep offering Dual-Layer SD drives. They have claimed to support both formats, and I expect either a combo drive, or the option of either especially now that the Mac Pro's have two slots.

The website for the fastmac BD drive mentions NOTHING about playing back movies. Frankly I don't think it can because of HDCP and AACS issues. The thing is why are journalists "assuming" that it does?

It may not be the best Blu-Ray burner but 500 dollars is not a bad deal
