blu-ray burners for editing...

ok is it safe to buy the latest blu-ray burner and start burning projects for customers to watch on their home blu-ray players?

I haven't heard of any issues. I know Philips has one cheaper than the Sony, as well as Lite-on, which is the least expensive of the bunch. The lite-on is faster I believe, because it uses SATA as an interface.

If you're wary of dropping $600-1000 on a BlueRay burner and then seeing a new one come out for $400 with twice the writing speed, consider using DVD DL :

I've had a Sony BWU-100a since last August. It took till more recently for the software to clarify. The software bundled with most drives is limited. There are just a couple of sub-$10,000 packages that will author discs with menus and will play on available players. I use Roxio DVDit Pro HD ($500) and it makes "BDMV" projects that look to players just like commercial releases, albeit with an empty digital rights management folder. The projects will play on Panasonic, Pioneer, PS3 and Sony players (the latter with 3/12/07 v1.55 firmware). There is also a procedure for putting short projects (20-30 min) onto cheap red-laser DVDs that play in the aforementioned if you keep the bit rate to 20Mbits or so.
