Ok. I'm on a C100 kick again. I can't afford it. I have a 5DmkIII. a 6D, and a 60D as well as an HMC-150. If I sold the 6D and the HMC150, I would be about halfway there. I can't see it being worth it, but I want it so bad. Help!!! talk me out of it. Go!

Assuming you have use for a large sensor video camera. And after all, you already have the lenses for it. |

Um, I happen to like the HMC150 a lot as a conventional camcorder.
Lose it and lose servo zoom and other camcorder conveniences that are more important for run and gun than they are for digital cinema shooting. Lose that nice deep DoF that makes it easy to keep moving subjects in-focus. The scene-file dial is certainly quick to use. You can get a Bebob focus remote and zoom remote and run the cam on a tripod for hours... you can record continuously for those hours. It's gives a reasonably wide-angle, the lens has a good range for my kind of work. Then there's all that glass you'll have to buy for the C100, unless you already happen to own it. Zoom and focus on the fly - ouch. Rent a C100 when you need it? Rent an HMC150 when you need it? |

Then there are the internet rumours floating around about the replacement for the 7D and 60D, so maybe wait on those. On the other hand, I too am saving up for a C100.

Just sold my Panasonic AF100 (Package Deal) on ebay. I'm taking the plunge on a C100 right around NAB. By that time, we'll see if any rumors are true (either a C50 or C200). Price could drop $500, $1000 or we could see some type of rebate. I'd buy the C100 today, but figure I can wait 5 weeks to see what happens. My next project isn't scheduled til early May.

Why do want the C100? You have a bunch of nice cameras. Can you achieve your vision with the gear you already own? Do you make money with your gear? Can you write it off on your tax's? Is this a expensive hobby and you have an addiction for the newest tech gear?
You ask to be talked out of it so maybe this will help or I just drove you to the store. |

Ok. So...
1. I want it for easier adjustment in post and not to have to synch audio. It would save a lot of.time and frustration in post. 2. I have plenty of lenses . 3. I only use the HMC for a locked down wide shot and nothing else. 4. I do this full time and make a solid living with my cameras so yeah it's a tax deduction. Still want it. :) |

Soo, you want it but can't afford it, even if you would sell 2 camera's, you are answering your own question here :)
I always say to use what you can afford but sometimes you have got to spend money to make money, the most important question is, will you be making more money with it? If that's the case then certainly go for it, what you loose now you will gain later. But if that is not the case and since your brides won't notice the difference between a 6d and a c100 then it's better to keep your feet on the ground and don't take any unnecessary financial risks. |

You will get XLR ports to plug in your microphone. So your quality levels would be better (as compared to slapping a non-XLR microphone on the 6D).
I would say just lose the 60D and the HMC -150 and if you want even the 6D and go for the C100. You can always pick up a still camera second hand. And since it is tax deductable, it will become easier for you. The quality of the C100 is obviously better than the DSLR. Whether the C100 can segregate you from the DSLR crowd or not is your marketing challenge. Try that. |

If you really want to be talked out of it though, just remember that the C100 will not give you 60p, any kind of time lapse functionality, and no SDI In/Out. You are stuck at 24p, and absolutely nothing else. It is amazing 24p, but for Canon not to include other basic functionality in a $6K+ camera is too unreasonable INHO. On the other hand, you have an amazing form factor, amazing image, and ND's and XLR built into one small body which will save you lots of time from having to carry these extra items around like you would with your Mark 3. My personal choice was to go with a Mark 3 and a Pix220i recorder instead of the C100. I just could not get around the fact of not having 60p or interval recording, because I have depended on those features for too long with my other Sony cameras. True, you are loosing the detail and sharpness of the C100, but the Pix220i will give you SDI In/Out, 422 recording, and XLR inputs with sound quality superior to the C100. The Mark 3 will also give you 60p and the some of the best time lapse functionality of any camera out there. In your case, I would sell some of your extra cams, and keep the Mark 3. With the money you get from the sales, grab a Pix 220i. |

I have to agree with Omar's suggestion to wait for the NAB announcements... however if that changes your decision then there will be a further wait for those cameras to actually start shipping. Conversely, if you have a use for it now, then now is always the right time to buy...

All good stuff. Thanks everyone for trying to talk me down. I definitely want it not need it. But here's a few thoughts. It would not necessarily make me money but it would save me time. I don't use 60p at all on my mkIII but if I needed it I would have it there. Also timelapses, which I don't do could be done on the mkIII. I don't think that for what a used 60D is getting these days it would be worth selling. I'm frustrated with the image on the mkIII sometimes because if you get into any mixed light, especially flourescents it just turns to mush. I'm sure the C100 would handle that better and at least allow me to fix it when I get in those spots. I don't do photos really, except on vacation and I would still have the mkIII for that as well as the 60D. The only thing I would miss on the 6D would be the wireless. That is super cool for a vacation camera. You can upload your pics of the beach from the beach. But not worth keeping if I get the C100...

Just picked up a C-100 to replace an XF100. The C-100 has amazing image quality, low light capabilities, works with your Canon mount lenses, etc. I spent 6 months researching the purchase. I originally wanted a BMCC. I also looked into the HM600, Xf300, PMW-200, PMW-160, D800, 5D3, 1dx, 1dc, ac90, and GH3. I watched every bit of test footage from each that I could find. The BMCC was my first choice, but I don't want to wait another 3 months or have to send the camera back for the infinity focus correction.
The C-100 seemed to have better image quality than everything else except the BMCC. Came close to getting an XF300 because of the quality and lower prices for this of late. The C-100 can hold the minute details of a wide-angle landscape scene. Resolution, some degree of modularity, and wide dynamic range were perhaps my acid tests. I am very pleased with the camera. It is certainly more "run and gun" capable than a DSLR, but does not come close to the camcorders like the PMW-200 and XF300 when it comes to shooting on the fly. Then there is the learning curve and getting your custom picture profiles tweaked to your needs. It's another great tool with its own set of limitations. Your always going to be stuck with limitations of one sort or another. Renting the C-100 for a day or so could be useful. Waiting to see what NAB brings is, as Chris and Omar have said, a great idea. I couldn't wait and want to be proficient with a new camera by late spring. Good luck with your decision! Cheers |

I don't think Bill needs any confirmation to know the c100 is a good camera, it's more about if he should break the bank to get one.
You have to admit that the c100 is expensive considering it sells without a lens. |

WHy NOT a C100?
- No timelapse: yes, you can do timelapse on a DSLR, but they have issues doing 1-2 fps with longer (half second) exposures. Frustratingly, I find most of my timelapses need about 1-2 fps. EX1 was the bees knees at this, in combination with its Slow Shutter. - It looks like a funky DSLR to most people: so if you're filming events, shooting candids, getting voxpops, people tend to see the camera, turn to it and gurn (oops - pull the 'cheese' face) and not move until you patiently explain you're shooting video. At which point, they recoil in distaste at your deception. - The lack of a few actual SWITCHES rather than a totally software driven interface slows things down a bit. Take an ordinary camera: click, click - I've switched from outdoor white balance to indoor, upped the gain a little. With nought but a stubby joystick to navigate menus, I'm sometimes more than a little frustrated with the C100. (yes there are 'Gain', 'WB' and 'Shutter' buttons down the left side - even a one-shot Auto Iris, but you still need to woggle them up and down using the joystick and that means a two-handed 'look at the screen' situation - imagine following someone out from indoors to outdoors...) - The flip-out panel can't flip forwards: so many times, interviewees have appreciated a quick glimpse of where they can wave their hands, or I can frame up and (for the best part) light an interview by myself using the screen facing forwards. Not so with the C100. The answer is (cha-ching! $1k) add a Ninja, which you'll be wanting anyway.... - If you're into nit-picking, pixel-peeping issues and prefer AVCHD over ProRes, there's something fishy going on with the 'PSF' of the C100. Depending on what method I use to bring rushes into FCPX, I'm seeing little splotches of interlacedness for just a few frames in areas like mouths and eyes. You're not going to spot this in every-day use, nor when it's got onto the web, but you may see it whilst editing, where it becomes a 'Lady Macbeth' obsession ('out, damned interlace!') - You have to power-off to change lenses 'or dire things happen'. I'm not sure what they are, but it's scared the heebie jeebies out of me. - The 'last shot playback' in camera mode is mute. Sheesh, that provided a few 'moments'. - There's no 'Duration' display, so if the journo/talent asks 'how long was that?' you're down to doing maths or guestimating. Or, with reference to the previous point, switching to Media mode - which is 'so, like, five years ago'. These are, to be honest, niggles and whines which I knew about when I bought mine. |

So I was wondering if anyone's tried to match footage from these two cameras and had any success? |

Now, usually the AVCHD codec is so good, it's really hard to visually tell the difference between it and a parallel ProRes 422 recording (spent yesterday afternoon trying to break it). Here's some preliminary stuff: 4:2:2 vs 4:2:0 on the C100 The second 'flip/flop' sequence (the eye) demonstrates the interlace squiffiness. So, the grainy image is the first frame, I'm confident that it falls on an I frame. The following image is the next frame, which would be a P frame. It's in these 'pairs' of P frames that show the pseudo-interlacing when - and only when - the codec is under a lot of stress (like 18dB of noise and hand-held wobble-cam, or a really detailed image with lots going on). But I am still amazed at the lack of visible difference between the 4:2:0 and 4:2:2 from the C100 when the scene isn't too demanding. I tried 12 cycles of recompression to the XDCAM 422 codec on the pepper footage with no discernable quality loss, and that includes the AVCHD and ProRes-LT stuff within it. I was hoping to see some degradation, but this could only be seen in the WFM and Vectorscope. The 'fishiness' of the PSF is almost completely cured by converting the AVCHD to ProRes in FCPX, too. So it may be something to do with the way FCPX is interpreting the AVCHD - flicking through rushes at 200% magnification, frame by frame, looking for interlace artefacts in what should be progressive frames is a bit obsessive and sometimes 'you see what you want to see'. One thing - ONE THING - which we all see regularly, and is a true 'Mark of Cain' in any 4:2:0 footage, is a sort of sawtooth pattern along the edges of oversaturated reds (see attachment below), though it crops up in any area of strong colour. Nature of the AVCHD/XDCAM-EX beast, though the 'pointy' version seems to be unique to the C100. BTW, integrated C100 footage with Sony F3 and EX1 rushes with no issues - keep sharpness down (!!), use CineGammas (1,3 ad 4), don't touch the colour stuff, use WDR on the C100 - they can be brought together very successfully. Recently had a comment from an editor that my C100 looks VERY like the F3 on XDCAM codec. |

If you can't afford a C100 but still want it, might as well aim higher and 'want' a C300, which just saw a $2,000 price drop.

Buy it. I too loved my HMC, but I do not miss it. The C100 kills in low light, audio sounds
gorgeous, and I do not miss servo zoom at all. Footage is crisp, colors are beautiful. Lose the 6d and HMC150, and just order today!! |

Last year I was shooting weddings with a C300 & DSLRs. In the end I sold the C300 & the main reason was that the image was so damn good that the footage stands out like a sore thumb. The image is good not because it is incredibly detailed but also the dynamic range is far better plus with zebras you get the exposure as good as possible anyway. The choice was between getting three similar cameras (by this time the C100 had shipped) which didn't make financial sense or selling the C300 & getting another 5D3.
It's better for my uses to use a couple of 5D3s along with an XF105. The latter is a proper camcorder & is great for the unattended wide angle safety shot. It has more detail than the 5D3 so works well for wide shots but doesn't have the crazily wonderful amount of detail of the C300 (& presumably the C100). The 10X servo zoom is useful sometimes especially for getting the framing right. It has XLR audio & the image matches well with 5D3. The battery lasts for hours & it records 82 minutes of video on a 32GB CF card. |
Try one first
I was hooked on the C100 until I actually used one. Early December a local rental place picked one up. They let me try it out in the lobby for about 20 minutes. Liked the image, like the body design but the viewfinder was awful, lack of frame-rates, no time-lapse, no 60p. With a slight hit on image quality the Af100 has similar and more features at less than half the cost. In the end I bought a DSLR and waiting until NAB.
