Quick sound / mic question before a trip to China and beyond....
 

Hey guys!

I'm off to East Asia in the afternoon tomorrow. Going to be a trip similar to this but more of a tour documentary through NE China, S. Korea, and Japan. Stoked to see what the C100 can do. Touring the China Underground | Features | Impose Magazine

Anyways, MIC question. I have :

Shure BP89
Rode Videomic
Handle Mic
Zoom H6 (away from the C100)

Since the Rode is it's own entity, could I capture sound from the Rode + BP89 at the same time? AND/OR Rode + Handle? I assume since the Rode is it's own entity I could do, what, one channel from the Handle Mic, or will they layer atop one another?

My main question is, I only see one volume bar. Would that be split no matter what combo of mics I use? Is recording from all three a possibility?

- and lastly - in say the FCP log and transfer window (which works great) how would I differentiate the layers of sound? CH1/2?

Will report as I go if I hit any serious snags, but it'll just be touch and go as we go along. Gotta watch that SHUTTER!!!!!!

Hi John,

Although it's ambiguous in the C100 manual, in my experience I haven't found the right settings that enables you to have an XLR plugged into Channel 1 or 2 (on the handle), and a Rode VideoMic plugged into the 3.5mm input on the C100 body.

But, you can still have your shotgun plugged into Channel 1 or 2 on the handle, and then use the internal handle mic for the other channel.

In your C100 audio input settings, under XLR Record Channel, selecting "CH1" means that each channel records independently, which you can later split in Final Cut. Selecting "CH1/CH2" should actually just be listed as "CH1->CH1&2" as it mirrors Channel 1's input into Channel 2 and gives you a dual mono track.

In my opinion, you lose out on a potential secondary mic if you chose the CH1/CH2 option. So, I usually keep my shotgun in one channel, and set the second channel to record the internal handle mic, on auto gain. Then in Final Cut I mute that second channel and only use it for when I messed up my shotgun recording somehow, like set levels too low or high.
