Canon C100 with 24-70 Lens
 

I'm thinking about buying this lens, but the lack of image stabilization makes me think twice. How forgiving is this lens when it comes to movement? I typically shoot on a monopod.

As long as you use a monopod you should get away with fairly stable footage but shooting handheld will introduce small jitters in your image.

With the crop factor of the C100, consider the EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS instead. Excellent optically, constant f/2.8, and image stabilized.

If you really want the 24-70 range, considering crop factor, the EF-24-70 f/4 IS is image stabilized, and optically really good (better than the EF 24-105 f/4 IS.

I have a friend who has the 24-70 f2.8 that he uses on his Red Epic, and he has had issues with soft images at some focal lengths above 50mm (which seems weird). I use the 17-55 now as my main lens on the C100... I really appreciate the IS, and the f2.8. As Richard points out, the crop factor makes it very close to a full frame 24-70, and I would definitely recommend trying it.

I shoot with C300 and use the 24-70 f2.8 L when I use tripod or other forms of support. However, I had been to my village for a family festival. It was the 85th annual Laxmi Puja (Laxmi is the Godessess of wealth). The light levels were very very low. I was forced to use this lens handheld (without any rigs just holding the camera infront of me like a DSLR for major portions). I was also not aware about the sequence of some of the rituals so I had to react like typical run-n-gun. So don't blame me if this doesn't meet your aesthetic sensibilities. :)


To summarise, I feel you can use the 24-70 handheld with your C100 with a monopod. Shot in c-log.
Some of the very dark shots were cleaned up with neat video.

I would say it's do-able, especially with the smoothing features in most NLE software these days (depending on how big you're planning on displaying this image). But, as others have mentioned, the 17-55 2.8 IS is quite nice, i use it myself. The 24-105 IS f/4 is also a decent choice. You might also consider the Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 DI VC USD. It's the best combo, Image stabilized, Full Frame coverage, so compatible with 5D etc, and bright 2.8. Hope that helps.

I have the Tamron 24-70 2.8 VC and it's awesome. Easily as sharp as the Canon and it has stabilization.

Another vote for the EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS instead of the EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L.

The 17-55 will never be branded as an L series lens, but for all practical purposes, with regard to optical performance it is indeed L series quality.

All you're giving up is full-frame still camera capability, and some weather sealing. But you're gaining image stabilization and it's less than half the price of the EF 24-70. The constant f/2.8 max. aperture is the same between both lenses. And the wider field of view is much more useful in my opinion.

I would choose the EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS over the EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS as well, because it is faster (and still less expensive).

However there is also EF 24–105mm f/3.5–5.6 IS STM which will allow Face Detect AF because it is STM whereas the EF-S 17-55 is not STM. Also this lens is considerably less expensive than the EF-S 17-55.

These plus the Tamron previously mentioned and others... we're embarrassingly rich in choices, I think.
