Two monitors simultaneously - is it possible?
 

I'm going to rent a 7D next weekend, and we would really like to have two monitors - one on the cam for me, the other for the director, the choreographer (there will be a lot of dancing) and maybe someone who watches continuity.

Is it possible to use both the AV out and the HDMI out at the same time?

Haven't tried it but I doubt it would work.

I have been looking into a HDMI splitter in order to take the signal from the camera and split it, one goes to an on-camera monitor (either Manhattan LCD, Marshall, or smallHD), the other goes to a large 24" for others to watch the footage on.

HDMI splitters I am considering are by Gefen/GefenTV.

This has been discussed before, but I think you can go from the 7D > MXO2 Mini and out to another HDMI and component source. You need a Macbook Pro in the connection as well for the host.

There are a lot of HDMI splitters out there that should work well. Get an active one that has electronics in them, not just a splitter cable. The Gefen ones, as most of Gefen's products are premium priced for pros. There are a lot of cheaper ones that are technically fine as well, in the $50 range.

Most pro monitors are SDI / Component HD only.
Plus you get long cable runs on BNC without the fear of bending / breaking HDMI pins.
Charles P. also has a way to run these mini-adapters off of anton battery packs.

I plan on powering mine with an aftermarket Swit EX1 battery (have an ex1 also).

Take the D tap out of the battery and just make a cable to go to the converter.

You definitely do not want to be running long HDMI cables, so having the converter right by the camera is a must.

Will rig this up sometime in the new year.. Waiting on my Z Finder to arrive and some more invoices to be paid so more toys can be acquired.
