Snow be damned! as long as my camera makes it out the door! HaHa!

Wonder how many T2i's they sold in the first couple of hours of availability? Seems like this has been a VERY hot item of discussion here and several other large forums!

Don't know what kind of shape B&H will be in after today with 2 feet of snow coming.

Lucky that my shoot is in the city today rather than tomorrow. Just drizzle right now for the rest of the day.

We will all be very interested in knowing your assessment of camera once you've received it.

Hey guys, I am thinking about ordering one and having it shipped here in time to do a gig saturday. Not to turn this into a lens discussion but I need a wide fast prime to use on my Glide Cam rig (dual arm and vest, can't remember the actual name) and for general purpose use. I have about $1,000 to spend on the lens and would like to order it from b & h at the same time as the camera so I only have to pay for shipping once. It doesn't have to be the greatest or even Canon, just something as a good general use until I can save some cash for a good L series. Here is the one I'm looking at:

Canon | Wide Angle EF 28mm f/1.8 USM Autofocus Lens | 2510A003

Thanks

Is this going to be wide enough for your needs? (with the 550D's 1.6X crop factor)

J. Chris Moore February 24th, 2010 12:00 PM

See that's what I really don't know. The only thing wider in a Canon glass is the 20mm f2.8 but I'm concerned how it will preform in low light situation. Maybe a sigma lenses would be a better fit but I don't know about their build quality or performance. Maybe this one:

I would go for this lens on a glidecam - adds more weight also.

Keep in mind that you'll have to pull focus yourself since AF in video mode is unuseable, so you will have to get used to it. I use the Sigma 30/1.4, and DOF is razor thin. Will you have enough time to figure it all out?

For $1000-, you could get both the Sigma 30/1.4 and 20/1.8.

There is some really good info in this thread - and dotted around in the Stabiliser Section. Might I suggest we maybe continue the discussion over there - rather than hijack this thread?

Thanks for the link to the other thread. Sorry about the hijack, I'll continue this over there. The mod is welcome to move these post there too. Thanks for all the quick replies too! This forum is great!

B & H is now showing the t2i as temporarily out of stock now. Guess they sold out this morning. Dang it! Oh well, guess I'll have to wait now.

Michael Simons February 24th, 2010 04:26 PM

After reading all these posts, I put my order in at Brick Photo Center. They are getting it tomorrow. I will use the TR7 or whatever it's called as a backup to my 7D.

Chris, can we have that section now please? :P I'm sure you're on top of it, but this thread is getting a bit long and it's going to be hard to tell the speculation apart from the facts soon...

And I know you don't like starting empty forums... So here's some threads I found:

Don't mean to be pushy... Just trying to help.

Just placed my T2i Kit order with Adorama, only to be told after the fact via e-mail it was out of stock. Not cool. Moments later, B&H has it in stock. Order placed, camera arrives Wednesday - B&H FTW!

The samples so far have been helpful, but not conclusive as to video quality. Unless someone beats me to it, I'll post raw files with full lens and ISO/aperture/shutter info for people to sink there teeth into.

There will be stair-stepping for sure, though the samples so far have avoided showing much.

A great thing I noticed in James Miller's video was the SD crop mode. No rolling shutter on the quick pans! I guess that's to be expected given that fewer lines are being sampled, but it was amazing to see.

Ken Diewert February 24th, 2010 06:56 PM

Erik,

Looking forward to seeing some samples - can you challenge this thing in super low light as well.

Also, what is the cost in CDN by the time you get it it here through customs.

Thank in advance.

Mine comes in tomorrow and ordered a Tamron VC 17-55 separately along with NeoScene to go with Vegas 9 to help with the HD workflow. I'm looking forward to see how it compares to the 7D. I think the T2i will be perfect for the quick pieces we work on at my employer to document and communicate projects. We've been using an old HC7 and SureShot S3 for quick work and hiring an A1 or using my 7D for more serious work. Now we will hopefully have a good cam for both stills and video.
