IS lens's
 

This might be a stupid question. But is there a significant difference in battery life when using an IS lens vs a lens without?
I just rented the 70 - 300mm IS lens for a shoot on Friday and just want to know what I should expect as far as battery life. I'm not using a battery grip.

All the manuals say that using a lens with IS on will decrease the possible amount of photos taken on a battery charge. I assume the same would go for video. As for how much shooting time is reduced, I would say that it depends on your camera/lens combination. I don't have much of an idea about the 70-300mm, I have the 24-105mm but when I just it for video I generally always use a tripod and IS off. Hopefully someone else might be a bit more insightful than me.

I would expect a 10-20% difference. Each IS lens is different, some are louder, different modes, different generation etc.

Over the course of a day, shooting stills and video with my 7D and 300/4L IS, I don't really notice the difference.

roughly 50% with the IS on compare to off, I was curious too and made a test run on EF 70-220 2.8 and EF S17-55 2.8, pretty much the same, 45-50 min, without IS I get around 80 min, but I shoot video only;
