they could just use an electronic shutter for video/high speed. I assume the 5dmkII uses a system like that?

I would like to believe that in the future, companies would make modular systems (like RED) once hardware becomes available that is capable for both systems. You would just basically have different grips with appropriate button layouts for each system and move the sensor/processing unit between the attachments. The video body would contain appropriate monitoring outputs, pro audio features, while the photobody would just have basic audio and monitoring options. As a company, the systems would encourage people to buy into your video and photography lines as well which should help with sales.

One problem with modular is that it generally adds cost. You need extra mechanical and electrical connectors, buffers and receivers. And sometimes, you add a bunch of flexibility that's not used, and don't consider flexibility that the market will need in the future.

Going modular may very well be the right move for RED.
