1D Mk IV section?

So, we've got the 5D II and 7D sections... any chances we'll see a 1D Mark IV section of the forums as the new camera becomes more widely available?

Chris Hurd February 11th, 2010 10:52 AM

All we need are people who are using it. We don't start empty boards, but once we have a dozen discussion topics, it'll probably happen.

Trevor Meeks February 11th, 2010 02:10 PM

count me in ;)

thanks Chris!

For what it's worth, I'd rather see a "Canon EOS" section, rather than a separate section for 1D, 5D, 7D, T2i, and whatever comes next. Seems like many of the accessories are interchangeable, and the issues are typically shared between cameras - which will be moreso when the 5D firmware update comes out.

I also vote for this.

That's got my vote as well. I usually search both forums for questions and answers. Putting them into 1 section would be nice.

James Huenergardt February 12th, 2010 09:43 AM

Personally, I like the separate sections.

Especially since they are totally different cameras and have their own issues, etc.

If we lump them into one thread, it will be a lot harder for me or anyone else researching them to see what other people are saying ONLY about that camera.

For me, I'm not interested in the 7D at all, I don't want to sift through a bunch of 7D threads if I'm browsing the posts.

Chris, count this as a vote to keep them separate.

I completely agree with Mike. In fact, I stopped reading a different 5D forum altogether after they started dividing it up in all kinds of categories; one section for Follow-Focus, one for Lightening, one for Field Monitors, one for Storage Solutions, one for Technical Talk, etc. etc. It just became tedious to follow. Why not just keep all "Canon DSLR" in one section, and if there's a post that only concerns a particular model, put that in the Subject line.

I couldn't agree more. Especially considering that the T2i is out now, etc.

Perhaps there could be "Canon full frame" "Canon APS-H" and "Canon APS-C" sub-forums. That way when the 1Ds IV comes out, and the Rebel T2i hits the market, those can be lumped in with cameras of similar sensor sizes...

Perhaps we need a poll...? ;)

Daniel Bates February 12th, 2010 08:23 PM

Alternatively, we could have "Canon EOS" with subforums for each specific camera.

Trevor Meeks February 12th, 2010 11:41 PM

thats basically what i'm proposing. sorry if I wasn't more clear ;)

Nigel Barker February 13th, 2010 05:43 AM

I am in two minds about this. The four cameras do have distinct issues all of their own but there is also a lot of overlap. Like Peer I am not a fan of splitting up into ever more specialised sub-forums but if the total volume of posting justifies it then perhaps some sub-division is necessary. Any discussion of the choice of lenses is very different for the 5DII & the crop sensor cameras but workflow & post-production of the video files is identical.

One problem I find personally is that when I look over in the 7D forum that there are an awful lot of beginners questions maybe from people who don't even own a 7D yet. A new 550D/T2i forum will be even worse. The 5DII forum has now reached a certain maturity as we are not generally the clueless newbies that we were a year ago (I very much include myself as an former clueless newbie as I have learned so much from this forum).

Floris van Eck February 13th, 2010 08:23 AM

Just split the professional and the prosumer camera forums. So 1D/5D and 7D/50D/Rebel etc. That would be the most logical thing to do.

This would be great.

Rob does a full analysis of EOS-1D Mark IV autofocus performance here (listing both positive & negative results):

We just shot an entire ~20min short film on the 1D Mark IV in Burbank/Glendale CA last week... details coming soon. Now if only there were a 1DIV/Pro HDSLR section to post those details in... :-)

I've got some video and questions regarding my new 1DM4 as well...wondering if I should be posting in the 7D forum or this forum?

The other Canon DSLR forums seem to be full of postings with large photos of new users un-boxing their camera or enquiring what other equipment apart from the camera they need to shoot a feature film. We got over all that stuff a year ago in the 5DII forum:-)

Antimo Ponticello March 10th, 2010 07:39 PM

I've just recently got a 1d4 and had a few questions about high shutter speeds and other 1d4 related questions. A 1d4 section would be a great addition to the forum.

The problem with this is that the video from all of these cameras appears to be identical, in my opinion. So really the price tag is the only factor for determining whether the camera is "prosumer" or "professional". So, what is the cost of a "professional" video camera?

If the 1D could output clean uncompressed 1080p over hdmi and it had decent audio connections than I would call it a professional video camera, but it can't. It is of course a professional still camera but that's beside the point.
