I donated a little more in Euros (vs USD, in case that made a difference since it was a different Donate button). I didn't recall seeing it the first time.

Re: 5D "HDR video" in Magic Lantern Beta

It's funny because I was wondering not to long ago I'd something like this is possible. Very happy to see this. I am in the process of upgrading from a 7d to a 5d right now and very much look forward to playing with this when I get a chance.

My question is this: Obviously there is some issue with fast motion. Is there a difference between 24p and 30p when it comes to fast motion? Could it be less of an issue if you shot at 30p?

Re: 5D "HDR video" in Magic Lantern Beta

Is this with regards to HDR video in 5D? If so then the answer is 30 would be better to use when shooting HDR due to the fact that your framerate would be halved in post then interpolated back.

30 would be 15 and 24 would be 12. So with 30 you would have better motion interpolation.

Though I must say the 60D or t3i would be better suited for HDR than the 5D since they can shoot 60P thus giving you a normal motion cadence of 30 after interpolation.

Thanks for the reply. I wonder if using twixtor could help with some of the motion issues? I am getting a 5D this week so I will get a chance to play with it before too long. I was just looking through all the features of Magic Lanter and it's pretty impressive what they have done so far.

Re: 5D "HDR video" in Magic Lantern Beta

I am using twixtor now on my own workflow. I'll share it with you when I'm done.

However, do try to use the scripted workflow that the developers will give you if you donate for the 5D unified ML beta.

I'm using this "beta" version and it is already very functional.

The scripted workflow is a one click process and includeds 3 small apps/software that automates the splitting of the mov file, merging the 2 image streams then interpolating the footage back to the same length.

So far its acceptable for a lot of scenarios.

It it the workflow I used for the samples I posted.

Off topic, since you plan to get a 5D, -aren't you attracted to the new nikon D4? wink wink... ;)

Look forward to it. There is a lot of potential in this. I hadn't read too much on the Nikon.. looks interesting. Out of my price range at the moment. Getting a great deal on a 5D and a couple of Canon L lenses.. so I can't pass that up. :)

Hey how exactly do you donate to get the beta of the New Magic Lantern?

Re: 5D "HDR video" in Magic Lantern Beta

Thanks Ted,

I donated and downloaded the beta. I should be receiving my 5D tomorrow. Will I need to download and install the current Magic Lantern firmware before installing the beta?

Re: 5D "HDR video" in Magic Lantern Beta

no brad, you dont need to install previous versions of ML. the beta can be installed on a 5D running the current canon firmware 2.1.1

Good luck on your new camera.

Re: 5D "HDR video" in Magic Lantern Beta

So Ted,

How do you separate the video into the two clips? It seems that the HD workflow that is included slows the clips down prior to rendering the frames. I thought I could import the A and B image sequences into after effects and slow them down with twixtor only to discover that it seems they are already slowed down.

Would love to hear some thoughts on your twixtor workflow.

Re: 5D "HDR video" in Magic Lantern Beta

So I am able to separate the different iso streams from the video. Came up with a real easy way to do it.

To blend them, I just put one on top of the other and dropped the top clips opacity to about 55%. Surely there is a better way of mixing them. Can I isolate the process in the workflow they provided to merge the two streams?

I actually had better results with my particular video using pixel motion in after effects than I did in twixtor. This method also allows me to shoot at 30 fps, split the streams, and then slow them down just the right amount to form them into one 24p video clip. This at least lets you decrease the amount you slow the clip down some.

Man, if the 5D could handle 60p at 1080.... This would one hell of a camera. Perhaps the 5D MKIII will?
