GL2 Mic Input Characteristics--Measured

FYI, I did some extensive work on this and posted it in the "Now Hear This" forum as "Secrets of the GL2 Mic Jack."

What sound card did you use? Did you measure its output distortion levels?

Good point, Don. The contribution of the sound card to the distortion I measured didn't occur to me until after I made that post. It wouldn't change my observation of the input levels at which THD took off (the threshold of clipping), but it does mean that the nominal THD's are probably somewhat better than I reported.

My computer sound source is the one built into my FIC VC19 motherboard. Uses a RealTek chipset if I recall correctly.

Might be interesting to check the soundcard figures. There is wide variation in performance figures.

Some have 1 kHz analog output distortion levels higher than the baseline not-clipping level you measured.

http://www.pcavtech.com/soundcards/compare/index.htm has some interesting test reports. Don't recall if they looked at motherboard-based audio, (but that is a rather harsh environment for good audio).

Hello Fred:

I am new to this forum and still finding my way around. How do I find the "Now Hear This" forum?

I am considering the purchase of the DM-50 mic. My initial testing testing produced very good audio indoors, however, I am less satisfied with outdoor audio using only the onboard mic. Perhaps a better understanding of its characteristics would help.

Many thanks and (from the Philippines) Mabuhay!

Mariano

Mariano,
To atone for my error in creating something close to a cross post, I have replied by email
