extension of minijack cable
 

Hi,

I've got a Rode videomic and a GL2 camcorder. I would like to put the rode on a boom. Unfortunetly it has a minijack output. What is the best way to extend the cable up to 10 meter? (I've already got the 3 meter VC-1, which I put on the 4 meter boom) I've read that XLR is not an option?

10 meters (~33 feet) is at the long end of the accepted usability of unbalanced audio, but it may work for you. Give it a try - the most likely unwanted effects are high frequency roll-off and noise pickup, but depending on venu and program they may not be a problem for you.

If after test you find that these are a problem, you can use balanced connections (whohc are supported by XLR connectors). If using your chosen mic does not have balanced output, you will need to get a balanced-to-unbalanced adapter for each end, or better, get a mic with balancd output, and only have an adapter at the camera end.

You can find balanced-to-unbalanced converteres with impedance matching transformers starting around US$20 or so from may electronics parts sources. Some have 1/4" phone jacks/plugs on the unbalancd/high impedance side - just use a a 1/4" to 1/8" adapter. I've used these in the past with acceptable results.
