I am looking at a Z1 right now, I think you would be better off with the Canon hood. The shutters on the Z1/FX1 hood would certainly protect the front of the WA adaptor, but they would surely make the adaptors use worthless, when open. The shutters, or more to the point, the 16.9 mask would encroach to a great degree on the top and bottom of the adaptor. The Canon hood would not suffer from this as it is round, with no mask.

The Z1 lens hood arrived. Great news! With the help of 1 strip of electrical tape as a spacer, the Z1 lens hood fits on the HV40 wide angle adapter excellently. The barn doors work like a charm in protecting the lens. There is absolutely NO vignetting as long as the hood is applied correctly. And it looks AMAZING! Sort of like a mini-version of my V1U!

Excellent Anthony, excellent. Remember that your Canon's v'finders are showing you the image overscanned, so there could still be image vignetting. Worth importing some footage into your NLE, as that shows you the entire frame.

Good mod to the HV Anthony, but you can see from your front-on shot how Sony have compromised the hoods efficiency so that it can contain the barn doors shutter mechanism.

If you get hold of a VX2k's hood you'll see the excellent way Sony have shadowed the hood's interior by having a 4:3 mask right at the front, so making the interior of the hood not only matt black but also very often in shadow (so probably 4 stops darker).

Just look at the hood's shutter doors in your photo. Their inclusion means the shadow from the 16:9 mask has disappeared, and to add insult to inefficiency, look at the reflections off the far2shiny shutter blades themselves. The lower one is almost acting as a light diverter, bouncing skylight up onto the front element.

The Z5's hood is slightly improved in that it uses a much matter surface texture to the shutter.

Still, you've done the right thing. What's the vignetting situation like? I ask because the Z1's hood is designed for the much wider wideangle view of the Sony lens.

As long as the hood is attached perfectly level there is absolutely no vignetting.

Aside from door construct and degree of gloss, how does the Z5 hood differ from the Z1 hood? Would anyone know the part number for the Z5 hood?
