HDMI via DVI
Hi
New notebooks come with HDMI port For example Dell XPS 1730 http://www1.ap.dell.com/content/prod...dhs1&~lt=popup In tech spec it says 'HDMI via DVI adapter' I am not sure what it does and was wondering if it can be used to capture video from HV20 via HDMI? Thanks Slava |
I don't know about the Dell. My Sony Vaio docking station has a DVI port. I can use it to provide video to an HDMI-input television (DVI doesn't carry audio), but it can't be used for capture -- it's just another video-out.

If you have a DVI-D port on your computer, you can purchase, or it may come up, a DVI-D to HDMI adapter.
The video signals on the DVI-D port can then be plugged into an HDMI. Depending on the adapter, you may need a HDMI to HDMI cable. Note: HDMI normaly has audio, but DVI-D does not carry audio, so you will need to add separate audio cables to make up the difference. |
Guy at work has one of those Dells
I guess the only way is to try ;-) Are there any programs I can use to capture via HDMI? Thanks |
Hi Slava..........
The "HDMI via DVI" mentioned in the specs for that laptop will be HDMI out only, not in.
Connecting a HDMI capable camera to that port will not allow you to ingest HDMI, and tho' highly unlikely, could damage either the laptop or the camera (or both). CS |
As Chris said, you will not be able to capture on the Dell laptop via the HDMI output port.
One way to caputure via HDMI is to use an HDMI to HD-SDI converter, then record via HD-SDI. One way to then record via HD-SDI is via the upcoming Convergent Design's Flash XDR. Other ways to record via HD-SDI is via very expensive tape decks with HD-SDI input. |
I think it's a matter of time when HDMI will be supported better
I suspected I cannot capture using HDMI via DVI adapter, but wanted to check Thank you everyone |

I hope someone develops an ExpressCard HDMI capture board -- I can't see myself buying another desktop machine...
