Japanese websites about the HV20:

Hi all, I'm new here, I thought I'd share my findings with you (can't wait for the HV20 - will be my first HDV!).

Comparison between SONY HDR-HC7 and the HV20 (untranslated; run them through Google translation or babelfish, as the images don't work properly anymore in the translated pages):

Enea,

Thank you for posting the links. They were a very interesting read. Have you found anywhere other than Impress and the canon.jp site that has demo video footage?

Chris Hurd March 19th, 2007 08:39 AM

Haven't we discussed all of these links already, in previous threads?

Unfortunately not, Robert. The grabs on the Sony vs. Canon website look promising, though, even the semi-lowlight pooltable images look better with the Canon. I guess we all have to wait for actual footage.

Sorry if that's the case. I couldn't find anything here, though, except for some posts mentioning that "Watch Impress" website. Could anyone point me to those older threads, if they exist?

The HV20 images look great. I can't remember seeing these links posted before.

Geoff Murrin March 19th, 2007 02:44 PM

Yeah, I think these are new links. I've only seen the impress watch ones before. BTW, I read a few rumors that Best Buy in the USA may have some in stock very soon.

Yep -
Definitely new links, some interesting stuff there - to-MAY-to, Toh-mah-to... both cameras look pretty impressive. It will be interesting to actually see these "in person"... doesn't look like you could go to far wrong with either one. Some interesting translation issues, but if you think abstract enough you sorta get what they were getting at!

At first I thought the Sony pictures looked grainier, then I realized they were WAY bigger than the Cannon shots - will be interesting to get them side by side at a comparable size.

That’s good that we finally get to see a comparison between the Sony HC7 and the Canon HV20 but video samples will give you a more accurate comparison.

What we need is a small camcorder shootout:
Panasonic AG-HSC1U verses JVC HD Everio GZ-HD7 verses Canon HV20 verses Sony HDR-HC7

??? Where's the doubt??? Just resize the HC-7's pics to the size of the HV20 to see how the canon outperforms the Sony by... a billion, trillion mlies... it's like night and day... I mean, from the stills to the video frame grabs, the Canon is so superior the differences are even visible just by looking at the thumbnails...

I thought there was some good new info and hadn't seen...

..all those links. B&H did ship my HV20 today though they aren't listing it as in stock yet. They got at least some in I guess.

Lorry, Do you have any of those other cams as I'm in the Bay Area? I'm more waiting on my Brevis35 as that is what I want to test the HV20 with myself, but should have that soon as well. Already have a step down ring to use the Brevis35 with the HVX200.

Regards, Alan

Welllll... I pulled down the pictures of the boats in the harbor/marina.
Keeping in mind the stills are of two different resolutions to start with (more pixels from the Sony) it's a pretty close call - there is a crispness to the Canon that is certainly noticeable in some areas, but there is more DETAIL in the Sony shot - very fine details are there in the Sony shot that simply don't show in the Canon (the colored bouys on the front of the boat in the middle, and wrought iron work in the apartment balconies for instance - and color wise I don't think that one bouy is actually a bright pink color in real life, but I suppose it could be... Canon reds seem to me to be a bit "pushed"). I saw CA in both, more in the Sony...

Ran them through an enhancing pass in an image editor just for giggles as well, and they were pretty close after that - that pink went away, so apparently the automated image "fix" didn't think it was right either...

The blacks seemed crisper and deeper on the Sony, but that could be any number of things. Side by side I'd give a slight edge to the Sony on detail, but the Canon has less noise... a noise reduction pass seemed to help the Sony, and did almost nothing for the Canon. I did see serious jaggies on the Canon where there weren't on the Sony... Could I shoot with either and be happy? I'd say the answer would be yes...

A billion trillion miles???? HMMMM... OK... sure, whatever you say... YMMV.

Both cameras look pretty good and the Canon will have a price advantage until Sony drops to match (and they most likely will - good for everyone!). If I didn't have Sony accesories already, I'd give the Canon a shot (and might anyway!). I'm as excited about the HV20 as about the HC7 I've got on order...

It's a good tme to be shooting video!
