Hv20 Downconverted to 24p DVD (img inside)
 

for anyone interested in seeing hv20 footage downrezzed to SD 24p DVD here is an image file i made that you can burn with any burning app and play in your dvd player. (840MB)~ should take 20-30 min to dl

it's compressed using bzip, it should decompress in the Os with osx pc's i have no idea. you'll need to also potentially change the extension to .bz2 if your browser wants to make it .txt, i also found that making it .zip worked as well once downloaded.

Just downloaded it and burned it to dvd to watch on my big screen. One word..... WOW.

Please tell me what you were using. Any 35mm adapters used? Or was it straight off the camera using the standard lens. I noticed a rack focus or two in there. What mode did you shoot in? Did you use manual settings or automatic? Sorry for the many questions but I really am in awe.

shot most of it in 24p Tv mode 1/100 shutter with custom color preset: color +1 sharp -1, bright -1, contrast 0. i used a polarizing filter,and it's all with the stock lens, most stuff i stayed zoomed in as much as possible and that helps the DOF, although that's just the IaF working at random, i didn't do any controlled racks. it was also a really nice weekend to shoot, the sky was clear blue, and that helped keep everything closer in latitude, and i shot a fair amount during magic hour.

as far as post processing i captured it all as HDV edited in 60i timeline, exported to AIC, removed pulldown with JES and then converted to 24p SD mpeg for dvd with compressor

i got my TL-h43 in the mail today, and can't wait to get back out to the swamp to test it out.

Thanks for the quick and detailed reply. This helps me out alot. I am curious though if there is a reason you are using the 1/100 shutter speed as opposed to 1/48? Isn't 1/48 more "filmic"?

Do you mean converted to 24p SD mpeg 2? What was the compressor setting you used to convert the footage to dvd. Just the typical one?

i used 1/100 because the 1/48 isn't sharp enough for me, it does have a hint of motion blur that is nice for doing narrative work @ 24p and helps to smooth the "jitter", but i wanted to render the best quality image, and @ 1/100 it makes for better screen grabs, and over all a sharper image, especially with all the jostling around in a boat

I see one of the directories has the sony housing with the HV20 inside, have you tested it? if so how deep?

i've only had it in very shallow, merky water, but it worked fine, used the remote in a water proof bag to operate start/stop/zoom see here:

the springs where i normally swim have been closed due to flooding, but i think they opened up today, so i'll have to take it down there tomorrow and give it a proper test.
