XF100 and Final Cut

So with the XF100 and the XF Plugin, can Final Cut edit the files without transcoding? Or does it need to transcode into ProRes or something like first?

Thanks,
Chris

I merely tell it to rewrap the files as Quicktime compatible ProRes 422 .mov files. It takes only about half a minute per file.

How big are those files? This camera will mainly have two-hour long clips on it, as it's primary purpose will be for focus group/meeting recording and podcasting.

As an example, a 188Mb file increased to 404Mb when converted to a ProRes 422 .mov file. have not tried more compact files, as this is fast enough on my Mac Pro.

In the Log & Transfer window click the wheel to change settings, under the Canon XF Plugin change to "native", then no FCP will not transcode the files. FCP can edit the files fine.

Re: XF100 and Final Cut

Thanks for the inputs!

I am currently using the JVC HM100, I love the .mov wrapped files and being able to import and edit right away without transcoding in FCP. However, I just held the XF 105 here in Hong Kong, and it blows the HM100 out of the water, and into the sky. The controls is just SOOOOOOOO much better, it is everything the HM100 should have been considering the price.

So my question is, FCP will be able to edit the XF 100/105 footage without transcoding as long as I follow the steps you mention?

Thanks for your input, the XF 105 is an amazing camera, I was flabbergasted by all the controls on it, and its size. I am doing research on it as I speak. I wondering if it will perform better than the HM100 in low light... That is the only thing I am concerned about with the XF cameras.

The HM100 is like a toy compared to the XF 100... I am preparing to sell the hm100.

Thanks!

Yes, that's what I'm doing. By the way, there is a whitepaper for XF300/305 on how to use XMF files with FCP, that should answer all your questions in this regard:
