Shotgun mic for 305

Hi All,
Just a quick question as to what external shotgun mic's are you using on the XF300 - 305. Am in the market for one primarily for doing weddings.

thanks

"Rode NTG3...great mic!"

Nice to hear, I got that before deciding on the XF300, I did note that the Mic clamp does not hold the mic so I need the Rode SM5 too which is a pity.

I have a Rode NTG2 which has the same problem which was fixed by wrapping some gaffer tape round the body of the microphone.

One way around it I know but I use it on another system and it need it to be gaffer free ;)

I've used the Audio Technika AT897 for some years now. a great mic for the money. However, I found that it too was too narrow for the onboard mic holder on the XF300. I bought the Røde mic mount which works a treat within the Canon holder.

I bought the SM5 adaptor for my Rode NG2and have found that THE ADAPTOR actually will slip in the XF 300's holder. I have a few shots with a dead cat showing in the frame -it rotated down so that the fur was in the top corner of e shot.

I followed someone's suggestion on the board and bought some O rings at Home Depot (plumbing dept), slid them on the mic and adaptor, and now neither slips in the XF's holder.

I use a hot shoe mounted clamp so it is a non-issue. it's got a much better suspension (thus vibration protection) than the Canon mount.

Larry, Thanks for the info regarding the SM5 - I think I will have to go that route (with O rings!)

Robert, Unless I got a 2 shoe adapter I would not be able to use that as I tend to have my light mounted all the time in the cam shoe - thanks for the idea.

I use the Senni 66, and that to is too thin. I can either use the mic adaptor OR a purposely cut strip of lorry inner tube rubber. Works a treat.
