xh-a1 lens equivalent
 

does anyone know what the equivalent lens on a canon dslr would be to the xh-al

as the dslr lenses are in mm and the video lenses are in x

no particular reason for the question - just curious

Video lenses are in mm too -- the XH is 4.5mm to 90mm.

It would be 32.5mm to 650mm in still photography terms.

The "x" in 20x is just the zoom ratio. Don't confuse it with focal length.

thats a pretty impressive lens then if it was on a still camera

i suppose the closest lens would be the 35-350mm at only 10 x magnification f\3.5 compared to our f\1.6

in still camera terms it would cost $$$$$$ or is there more to it than that?

You're talking about a Canon DSLR, and unless it's the pricey one with the 35mm chip, then there's a multiplication factor there too. The 20D, 30D, etc., has a 2/3"chip, so a 50mm lens from a 35mm camera is more like a 100mm on a 30D.

A 50mm lens on one of the non-full frame Canon DSLRs would equivalent to an 80mm lens when compared to a 35mm camera. The multiplication factor is 1.6 for the Canon DSLRs.

I've got some $$$$ invested in still photography in lenses...and more invested in Canon still photography bodies(40D, 1D IIn and 5D).

I would love to use my lenses with video....but with Canon that seems a bit complicated. I've got to go to a 3rd party to do that.

Here's the deal.

To use my $5,000+ worth of CANON lenses for my CANON XH A-1, I have to go to a third party like Letus.

Letus is good. They are a well respected company and I'm impressed with what they can do.

However, I'd probably go to a Canon source for both lenses and cameras if that was possible.

So....I don't know why Canon wouldn't combine lenses/cameras.

No lens or camera manufacturer makes a spinning ground glass adapter. They are all made by other companies.

XH-A1 and other similar cameras have 1/3" sensors, 8mm diagonal. SLR lenses are made fot 43mm diagonal of 35mm film or FF digital sensors. Focal lenghts are 5 times too long for normal videography. That makes the market for SLR lens video cameras practically nonexistant. Canon XL-H1 can take slr lenses with an adapter, they are used by nature videographers.

One other problem is that the requirements and controls on still and video camera lenses are different. For that reason a good combined video-slr lens can not exist.

True...being somewhat new to this, I just don't think of the obvious.
