Getting better sound out of my NTG 2
 

The reason i got the ntg 2 mic was so I could get more professional sounding audio.

Every time i record with my A1 i get this obnoxious hum....

Is their a setting i should be using to get rid of this and make my audio sound crisp and professional?

What do you set your camera to when using the mic?

I use the same mic on my XHA1 and it souds great! Make sure you have the switch on mic and not the other option. Also. if you are using a battery in you mic make sure that you are not using phantom power. This is a great mic and you should be getting good sound.

do recommend phantom power?

sometimes that hum is the mic picking up camera noise, i have the ntg1 and always get the hum. should put a shockmount but i dont wanna take it off and put it back on all day.

Fr the type of shooting that I do, I rarely use my shot gun on board the camera. I;m typcall using a mic stand. As far as phantom vs battery, I only use battery and have never used phantom power. SOm on this fourm have said that the mic is more sensitive when using phantom power but i can not confirm or deny this.

i have used both a cardioid condenser and a shotgun on the XH-A1, with and without a shockmount (even further isolated with foam in the mic holder) and i still get hum. if the audio is at a decent level, it is less noticeable, but i am suspecting the only way to entirely get rid of the hum is to remove the mic from the camera...

Well i have it on a boom pole. with a rubber band system attached....

still getting the hum.

Beware:
the hum might be just in your headset
(if connected to the A1),
for A1's audio monitoring is rather poor quality.
Judge your sound in your NLE suite.
It happened to me: I was scared to death -
until I listened to the audio in the proper environment...,
and it was OK.

Having said that, A1's preamps are not the best & most expensive on the market:
when time & circumstances allow for more complicated setups,
I run the audio through an ENG-44 mixer: the difference is quite noticeable.
