I don't really know, but I'm thinking when set on "high" it is similar to the "shockless off" settings of Gain and WB. There is a reference here http://www.dvinfo.net/forum/canon-xh...teps-pops.html to using the "low" setting to try to smooth out AE bumps. Maybe it's the other way round, which might explain why the OP above found it still didn't work!
The manual doesn't say anything particularly illuminating about how it works

"YOU CHANGE?" How can you change it if if it's "automatic"? I'm even more confused now.
I tried changing the settings to see if I could work out what it does, but not so far.
