I don't think my wife will let me on this board anymore

Hi all. I've been lurking around this site for a while now and after seeing all the footage from the A1 I finally ordered one. It should be here by Friday. I don't think my wife will let me look at this board if I keep spending this much money on things I find on here. Can't wait to get the A1 and start playing. Thanks for all the advise and clips about it.

Chris Hurd December 5th, 2006 09:44 PM

Hi Kevin. We can all relate to that... I've heard some stories but we won't go there. Let's just say, the trick is to get her involved along with you. Just be careful that the situation doesn't get reversed too badly!

Holly Rognan December 5th, 2006 09:48 PM

Welcome aboard!

I hope you enjoy your new camcorder.

money spent seems to be directly related to time on this board, maybe even squared !! I think my family thinks I'm crazy, although the kids like the camera I think (but the other stuff is adding up :-)

good luck !!

Don Bloom December 5th, 2006 10:18 PM

I just tell my wife I'm looking at porn ;-)

her response is usually "as long as you're not spending any money"

wives are funny things aren't they?

Don
(married almost 38 years-and she is funny)

Mark Bournes December 6th, 2006 06:29 AM

Yeah, I've tried, "but honey we've got to spend money to make money."
That always goes over real well. Maybe I'll try the "I'm looking at porn thing."
I'm open for suggestions too.

Chris Hurd December 6th, 2006 07:07 AM

It was pretty easy to get my wife interested in the A1... it was a Papa Bear, Mama Bear, Baby Bear kind of thing. The XL series cameras were too big and heavy. The Opturas and the HV10 were too small for her to take seriously. But the GL / XH size was "just right."

Steven Davis December 6th, 2006 07:10 AM

My technique goes like this...

Hey Honey, 'I need this camera with all it's capabilities just to make an attempt to capture your beauty, even then it would take at least 2 more cameras to even get close...'

Then when you get the camera, take a lot of video of her, add some music, b/w cutaways, then at your next gettogether with friends, play it to them.

Works everytime.

Kevin Myhre December 6th, 2006 09:07 AM

Hmm I might have to try some of these things. I think I might try actually filming her first and if that doesn't work I'll just say I'm looking at porn. The only problem with me ordering this camera is now it's going to be a really long week waiting for Friday to get here so I can start playing with the camera

Chris Barcellos December 6th, 2006 10:23 AM

Hey Guys, try this one. Try chasing her around like you are really interested in being, well,,,... intimate... and pretty soon, she'll start saying you need something new to occupy your attention.. Wallah..... hey, how about that new camera.....

Matthew Nayman December 6th, 2006 10:45 AM

Don, brilliant...

Thankfully my girlfriend is very supportive of the habit, and as long as I am not out chasing other women, I think she is happy for me to have my love affair with my cameras.

Rather Ironic that I dropped the older, bulkier XL2 for a slimmer, younger model ;)

Back to cameras; Kevin, you're gonna love the XHA1. Just take the time to read the manual and figure out the slightly confusing custom preset and custom function pages and you should be fine. Also, turn off AGC before posting anything about the lowlight not being clean.

Goodluck.

Matt

Bill Ravens December 6th, 2006 10:46 AM

if you're thinking of getting your (edit:)partner interested in video, it might be cheaper to just get a divorce.

Matthew Nayman December 6th, 2006 12:56 PM

Which brings more happiness though... a $5000 diamond or a $5000 camera. I can tell you which is more useful.

Also, I think we are assuming that we're all men here (and the assumption seems to be were all heterosexual, too). I know lots of female videogrpahers and cinematographers, but I don't know what their signifigant others think of their hobby? My girlfriend is always trying to get me interested in her competative swimming (I'm not), so I guess it swings both ways.

Anyway, I am simply meandering around the boards. I think I am going to go take a nap.

Well, my husband's very supportive but it helps to have 3 bank accounts in our family: his, mine, and ours! He's much more overwhelmed by the amount of equipment we now have to drag around with us when we travel to my gigs (he's a dancer attending the big weekend workshop; I'm the videographer recording the event and only sometimes getting to dance). He swears a van is in our future...

Bill Ravens December 6th, 2006 03:11 PM

sorry for letting my habitual chauvinism show. i've editted my post to be more PC ;o)

Kevin Myhre December 6th, 2006 03:11 PM

I think that would probaly be a good idea to each get our own accounts and than have our shared one. She rather spend money on vacations I rather spend mine on toys.

Matthew Nayman December 6th, 2006 04:03 PM

I find as soon as I start earning money with my toys, the Mrs. doesn't complain as much. Also, I think she just likes to see me happy.

Nothing like a camercorder forum delving into one of the world's Great Debates. Hard to resist.

Suprisingly, many of us may underestimate Steven's suggestion above but, in truth, there is no exaggeration (or truth of beauty & love) too great to say to a woman: You know, "climb the hightest mountain, swim the deepest sea.."

Plus, Patricia's idea of three checking accounts is rock-solid. Many disputes are often about Money, no matter how you disguise them. Unfortunately we're all - certainly -- Not Rich...so the idea of Making Money with your camera, in reality, might be a good selling point.

Alas -- I come to my own consideration that ANYTHING you do On Your Own, -- ergo Not Spending Time with your beloved spouse -- can cause resentment.

Of course, when in Love everthing is wonderful and there are no cracks on the wall; but when things are more tense there are cracks and flaws everywhere.

Good luck on workin' it out. There's an old Blues song: "Cheaper to Keep Her."

Jim Martin December 7th, 2006 02:39 PM

Alright, put the cameras down and tend to your women.....now

LOL!

My gf is SUPER supportive so I am definately lucky, with that said I buy and use all this costly equipment for the love of the process itself and for the money (I just cannot justify taking the money I make/save from my day job to pay for this stuffs). If there was no money involved I do admit I wouldnn't be purchasing all these amazing ($ EXPENSIVE) toys.

Mike,

We all know you have no GF...

:O

Kevin Myhre December 8th, 2006 12:11 PM

Well my A1 should be here by the time I get done with work. I think it's going to be a very long day. I just want to get home and try this thing out. I'm just hoping that they don't try to deliver it the the two hours no one's going to be home today.

Murphy's law says that's what will happen.

Kevin Myhre December 8th, 2006 12:28 PM

That's what I'm affraid of. I should probably find out where there UPS place is now so I can go pick it up when I'm done. ;-P

Steven Davis December 8th, 2006 01:34 PM

You can never monitor UPS too much. I'll leave it at that.

Kevin Myhre December 8th, 2006 01:52 PM

Well it's sitting at my house waiting for me to get home. Now I just need to find something to pass the next two hours quickly. Hmm what to do. Maybe read this board some more while I'm supposed to be working.
