I do know that it was not the frame, nor the tape transport misaligning like I first thought. But, they never explained what was wrong. Canon took care of it very fast though...

The tapes pay back on another newer XH-A1 just fine. So, possibly it was a solder joint. That doesn't really explain the difference off of the tripod vs on the tripod...

I'm also having the blue screen during playback problem.
I also have the camera on a Manfrotto/Bogen 501 plate. I'll check if playback works when I put the camera back on the tripod.
