FYI, the March 2007 issue of DV magazine showcases the XH A1 on the cover. Inside is a very positive review.

Same for the Feb. issue of Videomaker.

These reviews always point out that the 24f mode "degrades resolution slightly." And it's true, however, the corollary to that is the resolution is so high in the first place that a slight reduction is not a problem at all.

Josh, can you post the link of the videomaker review.

It is silly that the slight resolution loss is the 'biggest' problem with the camcorder. It is so negligable to me, that it really doesn't warrant debate or complaint on my part. I have more problems with the controls and some of the functionality of the cam (which I hope is fixed in firmware) that tends to go more unnoticed in the reviews, but are more important in my eyes.

It's all about measurebators measurebating, to use Chris's excellent word.

About resolution...it really pains me to say this because I've always been a 2/3" chip camera person, but the stuff I've been shooting with the XH A1 in HDV looks better than the exact same type of shots I do with the DSR500WS in DVCAM. Even the wide shots, which really surprised me. I expected the wide shots to look like wide shots from the Z1, but they stay sharp, even in the "loser resolution" 24p mode.

It isnt on their website just yet but as soon as I see it I will link it.

It is interesting that videomaker says in the "cons" category, that it is "pricey". Perhaps they have not noticed that it is at least $1500 less than all of the competitors, Including the v1u, z1u, hvx200 and hd110...

But otherwise this camera is owning the reviews... in fact i do not think i have seen one review that was not extremely positive!

Let's not forget that many of us will deliver in less than full HD resolutions for a long time to come now, so a small resolution loss is more than acceptable for the benefit of shooting progressive. Many of us would have to de-interlace footage later in post for any online delivery, which would likely take a much bigger resolution hit.

I've only shot 30f in the week I've had my A1. The footage looks great in my NLE (PPro)... seeing those huge progressive frames without any more jaggies. Progressive is also the *only* way to fly for doing any keying or roto work.

I'm an XLH1 owner and have been in love my camera for about a year now. And when the A1 came out I was a bit put off by the announcement of the A1 and G1.

But I have to now admit that I think Canon truly hit a big home run with these cameras, particularly the A1. It's provides amazing resolution and peformance for less than $4K. Quite an accomplishment.

I'm trying to get my hands on an A1 to use as a B-Roll and EPK camera for our production company.
