XL2 stills

Hey all,

I was in Argentina last week on business (getting video of wineries), and one of the wineries had a samba singer come in and do her thing before dinner. I got some video of it and it turned out real nice. No lights, 30p, 1/60, 4.4 iris (I think). Anyway, the sun was behind them, which gave a nice backlight, but I thought it was going to make them silhouetted, but it came out better than I thought.

By the way, I exported these as stills from FCP. They're anamorphic. Brought them into Photoshop and changed the pixel aspect ratio, but it said that's only for preview. Anyone know how to stretch it permanently so it doesn't look squished? Is it something I need to have checked when I export from FCP?

Thanks,

Jonathan

Hey Jonathan, those are fantastic. I'm curious, were you maybe using one of the ND filters with a wide-open iris? I'm digging that shallow-ish DOF.

Jonathan Kirsch February 15th, 2008 03:59 PM

Correct, Nick...it was on the 1/6 ND filter and I was standing about 8 feet from her. With the sun backlighting her I had to open the iris wide enough to get some light on her face. The overexposed background went well with the DOF. I like it.

Jonathan, if you haven't upgraded to Leopard yet, get the free application called MPEG Streamclip. It will export still frames in the correct aspect ratio. Very easy and painless.

QT Pro can also do a correct still frame export.

There's a glitch in the current version that grays out that function under Leopard. They are aware and are working on a fix.

Thanks, Greg...

I haven't upgraded to Leopard yet, but I do have MPEG Streamclip. Forgot all about it.

Hey Jonathan,

Excellent work! Those stills look fantastic.

How did the cameras trip to Canon work out for you? Back focus issue resolved?

Exporting Stills...

See if you've left the 'exporting still option' at 0.9 NTSC Pixels.

Try exporting the still at 1.0 Square Pixels.

Joseph...thanks for the suggestion...will try it out.

Ryan, back focus issue is resolved, thanks.
