Zoom Speeds

Chris, (or anyone who's played with the camera yet),

the watchdog mentioned 16 zoom speeds on the new lens...I just want to confirm that this is only the new lens...and that the zoom rates are tied to the lens, not the body...and thus we can't expect that new superslow crawl speed on any of our legacy lenses (playing a little reverse psychology here!)

I think they're tied to the lens, but I'll check in the booth tomorrow here at DV Expo. Good question.

Chris,

looks like your back from the expo...any word on the zoom speed thing? (just thought I'd move this back up to the top for a few minutes).

Sorry, I am an idiot. I totally forgot to do this today. I promise I'll check it first thing tomorrow morning when I get to the booth. Re-reading my notes, it looks like the speeds are in the camera head though. Which would be good news. The slowest or fastest possible speed will be a determination of a specific lens, but the 16-step range appears to be a camera function. I will not forget to look into this tomorrow morning. My apologies, it's been a very hectic 72 hours.

Thanks chris...no rush on my part...I'm just curious, as the auto zoom on the xl1s is one of its rarely trumped successes, and if it's even gotten better then...well....whoopee! Thanks again for all your hard work the last few days. I know it's probably been a lot of fun...but you've gone way beyond the call of duty for all of us that couldn't be there.

Cheers

Definitely in the body. 16 speeds available for each lens (20x L IS, 16x IS II, 16x man, 3x wide). Checked each one by hand myself. Hope this helps,

Thanks chris...I think this is good news. I'm surprised that it appears nowhere in the canon literature so far. If I'm correct the xl1s had eight speeds (found it somewhere here in the forum). I've always felt the xl1s was the finest autozooming camera in its territory...with 16 speeds, the xl2 is near the level of most professional cameras. For me, having a superslow creepy crawly zoom for my next hard hitting exposé is worth it's weight in gold.

Again, thanks for the research. Get some sleep.

Barry
