Lens Adaptor ?

I have a Canon 300mm lens which I having been using on film( PL mount) and a Betacam (Sony B4 mount) and am wondering about adapting it onto my XL2. Should I go from the PL mount to the XL2 or the B4 mount.?

Are there any differences or preferences, ie focal length etc

Thanks for the help

Is this a 35mm lens? Is that 300mm in 35mm terms? If so then this lens
should become a 2220mm lens (if I'm not mistaken) if you where to attach
this to your XL2 (due to the smaller chips in the camera).

Do you want a telephoto lens, or...?

Yes, it was originally a 35mm lens (Canon 300mm f2.8) and modified by Optex to use either a PL or B4 mount. I want to use it for Bird photography so the increase in focal length is fine.

I would like to use which ever adaptor that would have the best quality

Bob, you're saying it's a Canon 300mm f/2.8 -- check.

However, what is the actual lens mount on the back of the lens itself? Is it an EF lens or FD lens? If it's less than 20 years old, then it's most likely an EF lens from the Canon EOS system for 35mm still photography. And if that's the case, then you'll want to use the Canon EF adapter which is made specifically for mounting an EF lens on an XL-series camcorder.

See my article at http://www.dvinfo.net/canonxl2/articles/article10.php although the lenses I'm using in that shoot are Sigma and nowhere as fast or as high in quality as your Canon 300mm.

Chris,

It is a FD lens with an Optex universal mount . I use it with a PL mount ( or you can change it to a B4 mount), I normally use it with the B4 mount on a Sony 2/3" Betacam and would now like to use it on an XL2.

The lens is incredibly sharp and fast (f2.8)

There will not be any difference between a B4 or PL to XL mount, as any XL lens adapter mount (other than the Mini35) will multiply the Canon FD 300mm f/2.8 by a factor of more than 7X when mounted on any XL body. Optex, and Les Bosher also make mounts to fit the original FD lenses to XL1/1s/2 cameras.

I use a Les Bosher adapter to fit my Nikkor lenses (300mm F2.8 ED-IF, 600mm F/5.6 Ed-IF etc) on my Xl1s.

Tony, Thanks for the help

An FD mount would rule out the EF adapter, but it sounds like you're in good hands already.
