If your talking about the parts that switch from bieng focus to not bieng focus, or have a blurry background; It helps a lot to step back farther away from the subject and zoom in, then focus manually. The xl2 does not do a great job blurring images without bieng zoomed in from a little distance. I hope this helps.

Your making a b&w setting and increasing the sharpness sounds like a good idea for focusing. How much sharpening? that's always tricky.
