Another 16:9-4:3 Question
 

Kind of a dumb question...but I need to know
If I shoot something with my XL2 in 16:9 but need to have it shown 4:3 without letterboxing or squishing it, is there any loss in resolution or image quality when doing this? I understand the image will be cropped but I'm going to shoot with that in mind.

Or in other words while working in my editing app have the full 16:9 (960x480) frame clip within a 4:3 (720x480) time line and adjust it so its framed correctly. Thanks....

1. yes you will need to crop

2. yes, in theory you will loose resolution

3. yes, in theory you will loose quality.

Remember that the XL2 already is a very high resolution "SD" camera. So it
may not be noticable if you do things like that. But as always, do some tests
and see if it works or if the quality/resolution loss is too much.

I tried it on a few clips and couldn't see any difference on my monitor. If there is any degradation, I can't see it. I'm going to bring some clips to work and see what it looks like on a good monitor. Thanks again...

I have a related question. I'm working on a 16:9 timeline and this is the first one for me, having only used 4:3 previously.

I'm using Adobe Premiere 6.5 and there is a setting for 16:9/NTSC DV, etc. and I chose that. It doesn't look letterboxed on my standard def tv, I don't have a 16:9 TV.

Sorry to be so new to this issue, but will the Premiere settings for 16:9 be ok? or is there something more I need to do?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I am looking on the forums to see if there's anything more I can learn.
