How to Hook up a Mic to XL2

I have a mic and a XLR cable, I hooked it up to chanel 1/3 on the back XLR plug on the XL2. I have set the input setting to rear. I am not getting any sound out of the mic if I have my headphones hooked up to the 1/8" Mic input to listen? So I am wondering if I am doing something wrong? thanks for any help!

The mic might need phantom power, if so, turn the phantom power switch for that channel "ON" Make sure your audio for 1/3 is selected. If it is set to 'manual' turn the volume up.

Your headphones should be plugged into the headphones jack, not a mic input. Turn the headphone volume up.

Read the manual.

I have tried everything, all I get when I switch to the rear XLR input is a hiss noise. No sound from the mic at all. I have tried every combo of settings and no luck?? any body heard of these XLR inputs going bad?

Never heard of the inputs going bad.

Is the microphone working?

Is the CABLE working?

Does the mic require phantom power?

Do you get audio through the camera's mic when it is connected?

Are your headphones working?

Do you own a manual?

------

Set the input select switch to REAR
Set the REC CH SELECT SWITCH to CH1 or CH1-CH2

If your mic is plugged into Ch1/3 and your REC CH SELECT SWITCH is set for CH1 it will only record on channel one on the tape. If the REC CH SELECT SWITCH is set for CH1-CH2 - it will record the audio onto BOTH Channel one and Channel two on the tape.

What type of mic are you using?

Turn on the microphone attenuator (If necessary) by setting the MIC ATT switch to ATT (On rear of camera, with the phantom power switches)

On the other hand, for a 12db GAIN UP - Open the MENU and select AUDIO SETUP select R-XLR GAINUP set it to 12 db and close the menu.

IS the AUTO GAIN ON? Use 'manual' and turn the audio knobs UP

That's all I can do from here.

Thanks for all that, if I understand correctly, are you saying that if im listening with my headphones and I am not recording to the tape I will not hear sound? I hear sound that is coming thought the front mic that is supplied with the camera at all times when the camera is on and I have the settings set to front mic.

oh, and the mic i am using is a cheap one from radio shack Part # 33-128
I also measured the power at the XLR plug on the camera with the phantom power switched on, and it had the proper 48v

You WILL hear sound through the headphones, when the microphone is hooked up to the XLR inputs.

Can you test your mic somewhere else? Make sure it's working.
