Ultra high Contrasts with Canon XL 2
 

Hi iam pretty new here!
I wonder how i might get ultra high contrasts with the canon xl2...
Could you tell me please what i have to tweak in the setup menu to achieve this ?

Hey..

By ultra high contrasts, do you mean color saturation?

If your looking for more vibrant, deeper, more saturated colors, there are a few things in the custom preset menu you can do. there is the color gain bar, bump that up. Also there is RGB bars You can up the red, green, or blue gain.

Im not sure if there is a "contrast" tweak in the camera, but you should be able to do it in post.

I, too, am uncertain what contrast means, but the Setup level, Master Pedastal, knee, black setting, sharpness, and coring can all be adjusted, in addition to the RGB and color gain, within the custom preset menu. Maybe raise each color and color gain, press blacks, and increase sharpness. You can test the picture quality difference easily by turning the custom preset on and off.

The XL2 by its design will prevent over contrasted images but you can try this...

- slightly over-expose the image
- set the gamma and color matrix settings to VIDEO not Cine
- KNEE to HIGH
- BLACKS to PRESS
- Color Gain to +2
- Setup Level -6
- Master Pedestal -6

By far the best place to do this is in your NLE. There you have the controls to steepen the part of the curve you want to emphasize and still have some control over the shoulder and knee. It's a rare shot that doesn't benefit from contrast enhancement in post. Exception: ones that are properly lit in the first place but as I usually use what nature provides I don't get many of those!
