Combining Canon XL2 & Sony FX1 footage

Has anybody tried matching XL2 16:9 footage with FX1 (HDV down-converted to SD) 16:9 footage?

Has anybody also tried to match XL1s 4:3 with FX1 4:3?

The reason that I ask is that I may be teaming up with another cameraman working on some projects this year, and we will need to match our Sony & Canon equipment shots (mainly for final SD DVDs).

Finally, one more question (for possible future HD Canon/Sony projects on our agenda): Has anybody ever combined FX1 with H1 HDV footage for final TV program broadcast?

I shouldn't think there'll be too many problems (hopefully) matching SD work (all outdoor shooting), although I don't think we're keen on down-sizing the FX1 to 4:3 to match anything shot on an XL1s, or trying to convert the XL1s to 16:9...so maybe the 'old’ XL1s will be made redundant (a shame, because I actually prefer the 4:3 format). That means I may need to buy another XL2 body to replace it (I prefer the Canon, so will not consider buying a second FX1 for the project).

Yes Tony, I did this last year just after I'd bought my FX1.,
No problems at all - I used the colour correction settings in Avid.
I can't remember them off-hand, but just for you to know that it's possible!

Robin

What did the results look like, Robin?

The most recent project I filmed completely in 4:3 with only Canon equipment, but not sure if we want to lose end quality by squeezing either the Sony or Canon footage on the joint project. Probably 16:9 is the way to go, although that would mean finding more money (which I've not got at the moment!) for an extra XL2 body.

Tony,
I found these frame grabs that I'd kept:

FX1 straight: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...nystraight.jpg

XL1s straight: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...onstraight.jpg

XL1s corrected to FX1: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...ctedtoSony.jpg

Thses shot were all shot as 4:3 and as SD.

Hope they help.

Robin

Thank you for the frame grabs, Robin...and nice matches.

I prefer the XL1s shot, so would probably also try the opposite and match the FX1 to the XL1s.

We're going to have a meeting next week to decide, but I'm still leaning towards buying an extra XL2 body.
