Doing a short film soon, and have been playing around with various looks shot with an Xl2. What do you think? Any tips on how to get better shots with similar subject matter? Composition, colour grading, aspect etc..

I think your stills look really good... What are you using to extract frames?

Nic Smith April 20th, 2007 11:32 PM

Thanks Matthew! All I did to extract was take a sreenshot of the DVD in my dvd player software. It's prob not the best way to take the frames, as some of them have lines that look a big jagged.

I do not think you are going to improve much on any of them.

Would be interesting to list the presets you used for each.

I liked the coldish blue clip of ?? tree moss or fungus?

The horse is hard to tell because of the early spring grass. On this one I might enrich the saturation slightly, perhaps mess with the rgb.

I like the all.

I used the "documentary" custom preset file found here, with maybe a few minor variations, cant really remember: http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/showthread.php?t=48287

Shot in 25p, 1/50 shutter speed, everything full manual. The colours of the stuff you see here has been edited. The blue-green shot simply had a magic bullet look "Berlin" applied and the sunset one had a "Grad Sunset" applied. All the others have just had basic contrast/brightness and slight warming filters.

I really like the stills...the sunset shot...WOW!
