It's Anton Bauer's plate that the AB battery attaches to. It provides a cable that you connect to your camera as a power supply. It also has a slot where you can "tap" into the battery to power another accessory (such as a light) that is fitted with a "power tap" connector.

I know it's not the most technical explanation, but there you go.
